What are Secure Applications?
Secure Applications are web-based systems that allow researchers (both VT and non-VT), administration and staff to perform a myriad of functions and work related to sponsored programs, compliance and miscellaneous research administration.

  • ConfluenceThis site and the spaces within it can be used to document internal office processes, procedures, notes, projects, and other needs.
  • Award Management (OSP)Provides specific views tailored to roles within the research community. The system assists department managers in managing sponsored research portfolios across their organization. The faculty view provides principal investigators a portfolio summary as well as a detailed view of individual awards with expenses for all funds, awards and proposal documents as well as reporting, compliance, and final invoice deadlines. In addition to moving the Post Award process paperless, the tool provides numerous alerts as well as visibility into projects in order to provide fast, accurate, and complete program administration.
  • IRB Protocol ManagementAllows researchers (both VT and non-VT) to submit IRB (human subject) applications online, track the progress of submitted applications, and save IRB protocol-related documents online.
  • FiledropDesigned to allow researchers, faculty, and other Virginia Tech affiliated individuals, to share files with any staff member working in the Office of Research.
  • Banner 9University administrative software application maintaining student, alumni, financial, research and personnel data.
  • PAN Request and DistributionDesigned to allow OSP PAN Requests to be submitted by Post Award Administrators to the Processors for review and entry, as well as provide a location for PIs, Fund Managers and Business Managers to view and review PANs.
  • IACUC Protocol ManagementAllows researchers (both VT and non-VT) to submit IACUC (animal use) applications online, track the progress of submitted applications, and save IACUC protocol-related documents online.
  • Project LookupDesigned to allow various groups within OVPR to search, lookup and review grants/funds/proposal and related documents.
  • Summit ProposalsProposal submission and routing. Summit aims to facilitate the workflow for faculty, staff, and administrative personnel as they pursue and manage external funding projects.
  • Cost Share TrackerDesigned to allow OSP Cost Share Fund Budgets to be submitted and tracked by Post Award Administrators.
  • IBC Protocol ManagementAllows researchers (both VT and non-VT) to submit IBC (agents/substances) applications online, track the progress of submitted applications, and save IBC protocol-related documents online.
  • Email Distribution/Authorization ListsDesigned to provide multiple applications with the ability to have access to the latest department-level email distribution and authorizaiton lists.
  • Summit AgreementsUsed in the Virginia Tech Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) and the Compliance offices to keep track of any agreement currently under negotiation or setup that is related to a sponsored research project.
  • Disclosure and Management SystemDesigned to allow university employees to submit Conflict of Interest (COI) disclosures and manage any Management Plans (MP) associated with employee-owned businesses.
  • ID ToolDesigned to allow OVPR IT staff to perform lookups for Virginia Tech university entities.
  • Password Generator (Diceware)Virginia Tech strongly recommends using long (20+ char) passphrases for your VT accounts. Diceware is a method used to generate cryptographically strong passphrases. It is based on the principle that truly random selection of words from a wordlist can result in easily memorable passwords that are also extremely resistant to attack.
  • Cayuse — Front-end online submission to grants.gov and research.gov
  • Subcontracts DatabaseDesigned to support the storing, tracking and auditing of subcontract awards (subawards).
  • Integrity Training Tracker (RCR/COI)Designed to support sending RCR/COI training notifications and non-compliance letters and managing RCR/COI training requirements for NIH and NSF Grant projects.
  • Awards DatabaseDesigned to provide information about sponsored research projects at Virginia Tech. A valid Virginia Tech PID and password is required for access
  • ORC Certifications (quizzes)Designed to allow various certifications to be submitted and tracked by the Office of Research Compliance (ORC) (e.g. IACUC-specific and IBC).
  • Guest Account RegistrationDesigned to allow the OVPR developer to register users with a Guest account and perform any "bulk operations" on guest account creation.
  • Non-immigrant Export Control QuestionnaireDesigned to allow investigators and researchers to submit various certifications to the Office of Export and Secure Research Compliance (OESRC). (Non-immigrant export control cerfication)
  • OSP Training ApprovalDesigned to allow OSP staff to request/approve training and review available training material
  • Limited SubmissionsDesigned to provide for the dissemination/submission/notification/competition for sponsored programs that have "agency limits" on the number of submissions from each institutio
  • EFD Linker — Software to find and create a "catalog" of links to proposals and awards in the EFD and keep them managed for other applications.
