New Innovator in Food and Agriculture Research Award
Agencies
Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR)
Description
The Foundation for Food & Agricultural Research (FFAR) seeks nominations for its 2021 New Innovator in Food and Agriculture Research Award. With this program, FFAR intends to support and promote the future generation of exceptionally talented and creative new faculty who are conducting critical and highly innovative research, and are establishing research programs that will lead to expanded
availability of food and facilitate the global practice of sustainable agriculture as the
world’s population grows to more than nine billion people by the year 2050.
The New Innovator Award seeks to promote career advancement of highly creative and promising new scientists who intend to make a long-term career commitment to research in food and agriculture and bring innovative, ground-breaking research initiatives and thinking to bear on problems facing food and agriculture. Within the scope of the New Innovator Program, investigators will have the freedom to
explore new avenues of inquiry that arise during their research. Therefore, FFAR is
interested in the program of research to be explored and its impact as opposed to
a list of very specific aims.

Jeffress Trust Awards Program in Interdisciplinary Research
Agencies
Thomas F. and Kate Miller Jeffress Memorial Trust (Jeffress)
Description
The Thomas F. and Kate Miller Jeffress Memorial Trust was founded in 1981 by Robert M. Jeffress in
memory of his parents and is guided by its mission, to benefit the people of Virginia and their
research in chemical, medical or other scientific fields.
Since its founding, the Jeffress Memorial Trust has been a steadfast benefactor in support of scientists
and research of the highest quality across the state of Virginia. The Jeffress Trust Awards Program in
Interdisciplinary Research historically aimed to catalyze the future of scientific research in Virginia by
promoting the expansion of emerging computational and quantitative strategies that are accelerating
discovery across scientific fields in Virginia. Previous grant cycles have supported pioneering
mathematical modeling/simulations and analytics capable of mining ever-growing data sets and have
led to significant advances in bioinformatics, astrophysics, mathematical biology, drug development
and material science.
To further the mission of the Jeffress Trust to benefit the people of Virginia, the research scope for
the 2021 cycle, is expanded to encompass research that seeks to improve health for Virginia residents
(see below for more details). The Jeffress Trust is extending a call for proposals with a population
health focus. Applicants who intend to address the social determinants of health and/or health
inequities as levers for improving health challenges faced by residents of Virginia, are encouraged to
apply.

Maximizing Access to Research Careers
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
The goal of the Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) program is to develop a diverse pool of undergraduates who complete their baccalaureate degree, and transition into and complete biomedical, research-focused higher degree programs (e.g., Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.). This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) provides support to eligible, domestic institutions to develop and implement effective, evidence-based approaches to biomedical training and mentoring that will keep pace with the rapid evolution of the research enterprise. NIGMS expects that the proposed research training programs will incorporate didactic, research, mentoring, and career development elements to prepare trainees for the completion of research-focused higher degree programs in biomedical fields. This program is limited to applications from training programs at baccalaureate degree-granting research-intensive institutions (i.e., those with an average of NIH Research Project Grant funding greater than or equal to $7.5 million total costs over the last 3 fiscal years).
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) does not allow appointed trainees to lead an independent clinical trial but does allow them to obtain research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The overarching goal of this R25 program is to support educational activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further studies or careers in research
To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on:
Courses for Skills Development
Research Experiences
for undergraduate freshmen and sophomores from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in bioengineering or STEM fields relevant to bioengineering, such as engineering or the physical/computational sciences, which play key roles in biomedical technologies and innovation. The ESTEEMED program is intended to expose students to bioengineering research early in their college careers and interest them in potentially pursuing advanced studies in bioengineering or a related field. It will prepare students to join, in their junior and senior years, an honors program, supported by federal or institutional funds, that promotes STEM and entrance into a Ph.D. program. The ultimate goal is for the participants to pursue a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree and a subsequent research career integrating engineering and the physical sciences with medicine and biology in academia or industry.
