National Incubator Initiative for Clean Energy (NIICE): Topic Area 1
Agencies
United States Department of Energy (DOE)
Description
The Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is seeking applicants to establish the National Incubator Initiative for Clean Energy (NIICE). NIICE seeks to advance three goals:
Improve the performance of existing and new clean energy business incubators across the country by setting a high performance standard, fostering best practices, and improving coordination of the incubator community;
Strengthen support for early-stage companies developing high-risk technologies and scaling from prototype to domestically-based production; and
Catalyze investment in early-stage clean energy businesses by improving information regarding capital access for incubators, including disseminating analysis and materials on philanthropic funds, corporate venture, and other innovative financing mechanisms.
To accomplish these goals, NIICE is funding awards in two topic areas: (1) a national organization to serve as a coordinating body for clean energy incubators and a central source of information for clean energy stakeholders; and (2) set a benchmark to develop top-performing, clean energy-focused incubators by funding three to five incubators across the United States.
The eXCHANGE system is currently designed to enforce hard deadlines for Concept Paper and Full Application submissions. The APPLY and SUBMIT buttons automatically disable at the defined submission deadlines. The intention of this design is to consistently enforce a standard deadline for all applicants.
Applicants that experience issues with submissions PRIOR to the FOA Deadline:
In the event that an Applicant experiences technical difficulties with a submission, the Applicant should contact the eXCHANGE helpdesk for assistance (exchangehelp@hq.doe.gov). The eXCHANGE helpdesk &/or the EERE eXCHANGE System Administrators (eXCHANGE@go.doe.gov) will assist the Applicant in resolving all issues.
Applicants that experience issues with submissions that result in a late submission:
In the event that an Applicant experiences technical difficulties with a submission that results in a late submission, the Applicant should contact the eXCHANGE helpdesk for assistance (exchangehelp@hq.doe.gov). The eXCHANGE helpdesk &/or the EERE eXCHANGE System Administrators (eXCHANGE@go.doe.gov) will assist the Applicant in resolving all issues (including finalizing the submission on behalf of and with the Applicant’s concurrence). DOE will only accept late applications when the Applicant has a) encountered technical difficulties beyond their control; b) has contacted the eXCHANGE helpdesk for assistance, and c) has submitted the application through eXCHANGE within 24 hours of the FOA’s posted deadline.

Submission Limits
Applicants may only submit one Full Application for each topic area of this FOA. If an applicant submits more than one Full Application to the same topic area, EERE will only consider the last timely submission for evaluation. Any other submissions received listing the same applicant for the same topic area will be considered noncompliant and not eligible for further consideration. This limitation does not prohibit an applicant from collaborating on other applications (e.g., as a potential Subrecipient or partner) so long as the entity is only listed as the Prime Applicant on one Full Application submitted under this FOA.

Coordination Center for Programs to Increase Diversity Among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE) (R01)
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits grant applications from institutions/organizations to serve as the Coordination Center (CC) for the Programs to Increase Diversity Among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE). This FOA runs parallel with a separate FOA that solicits applications for eight Summer Institutes (See RFA-HL-14-021). The Summer Institutes are designed to enable junior faculty and postdoctoral scientists transitioning into academic faculty positions, from underrepresented backgrounds, to further develop their research skills and knowledge to enhance their career development as faculty members and scientists.
The purpose of the CC is to support and complement the activities of the Summer Institutes as they enhance the development of a workforce to meet the nation’s biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs.
The primary tasks of the CC will be to:
facilitate outreach, participant recruitment, candidate selection, program-wide organization, and assist with identification and orientation of mentors;
support research experiences through webinar and in person learning activities and;
facilitate coordination of the education and evaluation activities between the Summer Institute awardees, Summer Institutes participants and the NHLBI;
develop orientation and facilitate skills development activities for mentors
support the mentoring of program participants by assisting the Summer Institutes with the formation of participants' mentorship committees;
conduct cross-site and cross-program evaluations.
In addition, the CC will plan, arrange, support, and facilitate the Annual Program-wide Meetings, Steering Committee meetings, and other PD/PI meetings for the PRIDE program. The CC application should evidence expertise in both program evaluation and program coordination.

Botanical Dietary Supplement Research Centers (BDSRC) (P50)
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications to support research centers to develop and apply cutting-edge, transdisciplinary approaches to the study of botanicals with relevance to human health, that are found as ingredients in dietary supplements. These centers are expected to synergistically integrate a range of relevant disciplines (e.g., phytochemistry, botany, and expertise utilizing models ranging from in silico through in vitro to in vivo) to conduct innovative research to elucidate the interactions between complex botanical products and human biology. The long-term goal of this program is to support development of the preclinical data required for optimal design of rigorous, definitive clinical research on complex botanical products. Given the extensive resources required for clinical research it is critical that clinical trials of botanicals be supported by solid and extensive relevant preclinical data, especially with respect to mechanisms of action, optimal formulations and dosing, for example. Therefore the focus of these Centers will be on basic and preclinical research. The focus of this FOA is on research on the mechanisms of action of botanicals traditionally used for health maintenance, or on botanicals with strong evidence of promise for improving objective, quantitative measures of organism resilience. Use of relevant vertebrate and invertebrate models is strongly encouraged. A strictly limited number of human subjects research aims, designed to interrogate, e.g., in vivo mechanism(s) of action, safety, pharmacokinetics, or bases of individual differences in metabolism or response, may be included.
