MARC Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research (U-STAR) National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grant (T34)
Agencies
National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
The purpose of the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research (U-STAR) Institutional Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Training program is to assist undergraduate institutions to increase the number of well-prepared underrepresented (UR) students who, within three years of graduation, matriculate into competitive/research active Ph.D. or combined M.D.-Ph.D. programs in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, go on to research careers and will be available to participate in NIH-funded research. The program provides grants to institutions with significant enrollment of students from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences that propose well-integrated developmental activities designed to strengthen students’ academic preparation, research training and professional skills that are critical to the completion of the Ph.D. degree in the biomedical and behavioral sciences.

More Information

Submission Limits
• University PIs with a currently funded IRP, or three or more R&D projects that will still be active after September 30, 2013, or who have received a no-cost extension (NCE) on any DOE-NE funded project after March 31, 2013, which will still be active beyond September 30, 2013, are ineligible to apply to any Section of this FOA as a PI.
• For submissions to all Sections of this FOA, university PIs can be included on no more than six pre-applications total, with no more than three of those submissions as the PI.
• For Section B of this FOA, all applying institutions (i.e., university, national laboratory, industry) are limited to three pre-applications per institution per workscope area. If a university PI is designated as the lead, these submissions will count toward the above overall university researcher limitation of being associated with no more than six pre-applications total in response to all sections of this FOA, with no more than three of those associations being as the lead PI.
• For Section C of this FOA (IRP’s), an applicant is ineligible to submit an application as the PI if (s)he is designated as PI for more than one currently funded DOE-NE project that will still be active beyond September 30, 2013.
• A PI may have no more than one IRP or three R&D projects funded at any time, and may therefore not submit more full applications than would be allowed by these restrictions should these applications be selected for funding.
Cost Sharing:
For proposals led by universities, cost-sharing is encouraged, but not required. If cost sharing is provided, see 10 CFR 600 for the applicable cost sharing guidance and UNDERSTANDING COST SHARING REQUIREMENTS in Part VIII.H of the solicitation.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP) - Track 1 proposal
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
STEP seeks to increase the number of students (U.S. citizens or permanent residents) receiving associate or baccalaureate degrees in established or emerging fields within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Type 1 proposals are solicited that provide for full implementation efforts at academic institutions. Type 2 proposals are solicited that support educational research projects on associate or baccalaureate degree attainment in STEM.
More Information

Submission Limits
An institution that awards baccalaureate degrees is allowed to submit only one Type 1 proposal, or to be part of only one consortium submitting a Type 1 proposal. An institution that awards associate degrees, and does not award baccalaureate degrees, is allowed to be the lead institution on only one Type 1 proposal, and, in addition, may be a partner on one or more Type 1 proposals. There are no restrictions on the number of Type 2 proposals that an individual or organization may submit.

Title
Widening Implementation & Demonstration of Evidence-Based Reforms (WIDER) - Planning grant
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
The chief goal of WIDER is to transform institutions of higher education into supportive environments for STEM faculty members to substantially increase their use of evidence-based teaching and learning practices. The first recommendation in the Report of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), "Engage to Excel," is to increase widespread implementation of evidence-based practices in order to increase persistence in STEM and contribute to the goal of producing 1 million additional STEM graduates.
Through this process, WIDER seeks to substantially increase the scale of application of highly effective methods of STEM teaching and learning in institutions of higher education, by employing instructional materials and methods that have a convincing evidentiary basis of effectiveness. In particular WIDER seeks this transformation for high enrollment, lower division courses required for many STEM majors and taken by many other students to fulfill general education distribution requirements.
Included in our broad definition of effective STEM teaching and learning are not only instructional practices in traditional learning environments, but also modern laboratory methods and field research, proven distance education methods (or hybrid designs incorporating both face-to-face and distance methods), and improved approaches to motivating student interest in STEM. In all cases, the primary goal of WIDER is to increase substantially the scale of these improvements within and across the higher education sector in order to achieve:
(1) Improved student learning;
(2) Increased numbers of students choosing STEM majors, particularly from demographic groups underrepresented in STEM;
(3) Improved retention in the first two years of undergraduate study and to graduation of all STEM majors.
Applicants may apply for WIDER grants to begin institutional planning efforts, to support implementation efforts for evidence-based teaching and learning practices, and for research on how to increase the importance placed on evidence-based practices in institutional strategic planning and faculty rewards.
More Information

Submission Limits
Because the goal of WIDER is institutional transformation, an organization may submit only one Planning or one Institutional Implementation proposal for a given deadline. There are no restrictions on the number of Community Implementation or Research proposals that an individual or organization may submit.

Molecular Atlas of Lung Development - Data Coordinating Center (DCC ) (U01)
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute invites cooperative agreement (U01) applications to serve as the Data Coordinating Center (DCC) for the Molecular Atlas of Lung Development Program (LungMAP). The overall goal of this program is to build an open-access reference resource by creating a comprehensive molecular atlas of the late-stage developing lung (human and mouse) with data and reagents available to the research community. The atlas will integrate gene and protein expression profiles, transcriptome, epigenome, and other molecular characterizations with high-resolution anatomical information to provide molecular profiles of functionally or anatomically defined cell types in the developing lung. The DCC will perform data collection, integration, and analysis; develop and maintain the LungMAP database and website; and coordinate research activities of the Human Tissue Core (HTC) and the Research Centers (RCs).
Two separate solicitations seek applications for one HTC (RFA-HL-14-007) and four RCs (RFA-HL-14-008).

Limited Competition: Addressing Health Disparities in Maternal and Child Health Through Community-Based Participatory Research (R03)
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
NICHD requests applications to support developmental community-based participatory research (CBPR) projects planned and developed by recipients of the Phase I Academic-Community Partnerships Conference Series awards under PAR-08-106 and RFA-HD-06-019. Only one CBPR project will be supported per grant award. The areas of emphasis include: infant mortality; sudden infant death syndrome; fibroid tumors; childhood, adolescent, and/or adult obesity; literacy; techniques for outreach and information dissemination; pediatric and maternal HIV/AIDS prevention; and violence prevention.
The purpose of the Phase II initiative "Addressing Health Disparities in Maternal and Child Health through Community-Based Participatory Research" is to use the Community-Based Research Project (CBPR) methodology to conduct small research projects that (i) address a community health concern, (ii) increase understanding of community related factors and/or cultural beliefs and practices that significantly impact health outcomes in one of the areas of emphasis, or (iii) focus on the development of innovative health messages with the objective of increasing health literacy in areas of concern.
