Please note that the eligibility criteria for the ORAU program is slightly different than for the DOE, NIH, and NSF sponsored program; ORAU will accept nominations for students participating in research programs supported by public and/or private funding sources. To be eligible, students must have completed by June 2013 at least two academic years of study toward doctoral degree in chemistry, or in a related discipline, but not planning a dissertation/thesis defense before December 31, 2013; be a U.S. citizen; and be currently enrolled at a university as a full-time graduate student. They must be actively participating in research in the field of chemistry or a related field. We share our federal partners’ interest in receiving nominations from a diverse group of students, including those underrepresented in chemistry (for example, women, minorities, or disabled students).

Title
Nominate Graduate Students to the 63rd Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates
Agencies
Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU)
Description
The ORAU University Partnerships Office is pleased to provide the information below regarding an opportunity only available to ORAU sponsoring and associate universities and branch campuses. Please forward only within your institution.
Recently your President/Chancellor may have received a letter announcing an opportunity to nominate graduate students to attend the 2013 Nobel Laureate meeting in Lindau, Germany. This year DOE, NIH, NSF, ORAU, and Mars, Inc. will nominate up to 85 graduate students to attend the meeting to be held on June 30 - July 5, 2013. This program is operated by DOE’s Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, which is managed by ORAU.
ORAU will sponsor approximately 10 to 15 students to participate in the meeting along with the student delegation sponsored by DOE, NIH, NSF, and Mars, Inc. As an ORAU Sponsoring Institution, you are invited to make two additional nominations directly to ORAU for this program. This provides your institution the opportunity to make a total of 10 nominations for the program – two for each sponsor. As in past years, all nominations and supporting material should be submitted electronically. Additional information and the nomination form may be found at www.orau.org/lindau.
Since 1951, Nobel Prize winners and students have met annually in Lindau. Each year an international group of students attend the week-long meeting. The Laureates will lecture on topics of their choice in the mornings and participate in less formal discussions with students in the afternoons and evenings. Information on the most recent meeting is available on the web at www.orau.org/lindau/past-mtgs/default.htm.

Shared Instrumentation Grant Program (S10)
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
The ORIP Shared Instrument Grant (SIG) program encourages applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase or upgrade a single item of expensive, specialized, commercially available instrumentation or an integrated system that costs at least $100,000. The maximum award is $600,000. Types of instruments supported include, but are not limited to, confocal and electron microscopes, biomedical imagers, mass spectrometers, DNA sequencers, biosensors, cell-sorters, X-ray diffraction systems, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometers among others.
Applications will be accepted that request a single, commercially available instrument or integrated system which costs at least $100,000. There is no upper limit on the cost of the instrument, but the maximum award is $600,000. Since the cost of the various instruments will vary, it is anticipated that the size of the award also will vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend on the funds available for the SIG program.
NOTE: During the electronic submission process, a warning will be generated for any S10 with a budget in excess of $500,000. This warning can be ignored.

Submission Limits
There is no limit on the number of applications an institution may submit provided the applications are for different types of equipment.

Title
Simons Investigators in Physics
Agencies
Simons Foundation (Simons)
Description
The Simons Foundation invites nominations for the Simons Investigators in Mathematics, Physics, and Theoretical Computer Science program. Simons Investigators are outstanding theoretical scientists who receive long-term research support from the Simons Foundation. Rationale: The Simons Investigators program aims to provide a stable base of support for outstanding scientists, enabling them to undertake long-term investigations of the fundamental questions. Level and Duration of Funding: A Simons Investigator is appointed for an initial period of five years. Renewal for an additional five years is contingent upon the evaluation of scientific impact of the Investigator. Renewal beyond the 10-year period will not be considered. Appointments will begin September 1, 2013. An Investigator position may be interrupted and resumed for reasons that would normally justify a leave from a university such as illness, need to care for family members, or national service. Periods of sabbatical or research leave do not interrupt the Investigator position. Support may be withdrawn at any time at the discretion of the foundation, but it is expected that termination of the grant at times other than 5 or 10 years would occur only in very rare cases. An Investigator will receive research support in an amount initially set at $100,000 per year. An additional $10,000 per year will be provided to the Investigator’s department. The award is administered through the institution at which the Investigator is appointed, and this institution will receive 20% in indirect costs. Appropriate Expenses: The funding provided to the Investigator may be used at the Investigator’s discretion to support research expenses in the following categories: • Up to one month of summer salary • Teaching reduction only down to the level of one course per semester • Salary support for postdoctoral, graduate or undergraduate research assistants • Domestic or international travel • Short or long-term visitors • Research equipment Expenditures in other expense categories may be possible, but must be approved in advance by the foundation. Funding provided for the Investigator’s department should be used at the discretion of the department Chair to provide support for seminars, visitors, refreshments, and related expenditures that benefit the research activities of the department. The department is expected to provide appropriate administrative support to the Investigator. Eligibility: To be an Investigator, a scientist must be engaged in theoretical research in Mathematics, Physics or Computer Science and must have a primary appointment as a faculty member at a U.S. or Canadian institution with a Ph.D. program and not have previously been a Simons Investigator. The foundation reserves the right to determine eligibility but, typically, a ‘primary appointment’ is defined as one where an Investigator is a full time employee of an academic institution and with a teaching load that is comparable to that of other faculty members in the same department. Investigators may transfer their award to a new educational institution within the U.S. or Canada, subject to approval from the foundation and the old and new institutions. The award will be interrupted or terminated, at the foundation’s discretion, if an Investigator takes up a primary long-term position at a research Institute, National Laboratory, non-US or for-profit organization or accepts a major administrative responsibility that significantly reduces the time available for research.
