Title
Science and Engineering Program
Agencies
W. M. Keck Foundation
Description
The Foundation strives to fund endeavors that are distinctive and novel in their approach. It encourages projects that are high-risk with the potential for transformative impact. "High-risk" comprises a number of factors, including questions that push the edge of the field, present unconventional approaches to intractable problems, or challenge the prevailing paradigm. In all our programs, "transformative" may mean creation of a new field of research, development of new instrumentation enabling observations not previously possible, or discovery of knowledge that challenges prevailing perspectives. In addition to the above, in the Southern California Program, transformative may also mean positioning an organization for growth and adaptability. Applicants may find it helpful to look over the abstracts of recent grants for understanding funding priorities. Grant abstracts may be found on our website within the particular program of interest.
Funding is awarded to universities and institutions nationwide for projects in research that:
Focus on important and emerging areas of research
Have the potential to develop breakthrough technologies, instrumentation or methodologies
Are innovative, distinctive and interdisciplinary
Demonstrate a high level of risk due to unconventional approaches, or by challenging the prevailing paradigm
Have the potential for transformative impact, such as the founding of a new field of research, the enabling of observations not previously possible, or the altered perception of a previously intractable problem
Does not focus on clinical or translational research, treatment trials or research for the sole purpose of drug development
Fall outside the mission of public funding agencies
Demonstrate that private philanthropy generally, and the W. M. Keck Foundation in particular, is essential to the project’s success

This RET Site solicitation has been revised to:
Clarify the minimum number of teachers per Site, a minimum number of weeks for the research component, and expectations for academic-year follow-up activities;
Strongly encourage industrial partners, as well as involvement of faculty, undergraduate students, and graduate students as part of the university team; and
Revise the approach to budgeting for Sites and Supplements.
RET Sites support a cohort of at least 10 STEM teachers and/or community college faculty per year for a minimum of six weeks during the summer. The STEM teachers and/or community college faculty will participate in summer research activities with a common intellectual focus on a host university campus and will then participate in academic-year follow-up activities including integration of content and methods related to the summer research into their classroom practice and other related outreach activities involving teachers in their local school districts

Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) in Engineering and Computer Science
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
The Directorate for Engineering (ENG) and the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE), have joined to support the Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) in Engineering and Computer Science program. This program supports active long-term collaborative partnerships between K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering, Computer and Information Science, and Mathematics (STEM) teachers and community college and university faculty and students to bring knowledge of engineering or computer and information science and engineering as well as technological innovation to pre-college/community college classrooms. The goal of these partnerships is to enable K-12 STEM teachers and community college faculty to translate their research experiences and new knowledge gained in university settings into their classroom activities. The university team will include faculty, graduate and undergraduate students as well as industrial advisors. Involvement of graduate students in support of academic-year classroom activities is particularly encouraged. Partnerships with inner city, rural or other high needs schools are especially encouraged, as is participation by underrepresented minorities, women, and persons with disabilities.
As part of the long-term partnership arrangements, university undergraduate/graduate students will partner with pre-college/community college faculty in their classrooms during the academic year to help teach engineering/computer science concepts.
This announcement features two mechanisms for support of in-service and pre-service K-12 STEM teachers and community college faculty: (1) RET supplements to ongoing ENG and CISE awards and (2) new RET Site awards. RET supplements may be included outside this solicitation in proposals for new or renewed NSF Directorate for Engineering (ENG) and Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) grants or as supplements to ongoing NSF ENG and CISE funded projects. RET in Engineering and Computer Science Sites, through this solicitation, are based on independent proposals from engineering or computer and/or information science departments, schools or colleges to initiate and conduct research participation projects for K-12 STEM teachers and/or community college faculty.

Centers for Agricultural Safety and Health (U54)
Agencies
Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
Description
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) invites applications for Centers for Agricultural Safety and Health (Ag Centers). Ag Centers are expected to conduct high quality research and help translate scientific discoveries into practical applications to improve worker safety and health in the areas of agriculture, forestry, and fishing. Center functions should include developing integrated approaches that link basic science with translation and outreach activities. Center structure should take advantage of diverse scientific resources and focus on local, regional, and/or national worker safety and health issues. Centers should place emphasis on the creation and implementation of evidence-based solutions that address important agricultural safety and health problems. Collaborations with other academic institutions, nonprofit organizations, and other occupational safety and health focused groups are expected. Applicants must concisely describe the occupational health burden within their service area and directly link research and outreach activities to help alleviate the burden. Applicants should also clearly articulate the anticipated impacts of the proposed work, both during the project period and beyond.

Research Education: Bridges to the Doctorate (R25)
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) R25 program is to support educational activities that enhance the diversity of the biomedical research workforce.
To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Courses for Skills Development and Research Experiences.
The Bridges to Doctorate Program is intended to provide these educational activities to Master's level students to increase transition to and completion of Ph.D.'s in biomedical sciences. A program application must include each educational activity, and describe how they will be synergized to make a comprehensive program.
This program requires partnerships between master's degree-granting institutions with doctorate degree-granting institutions.
Additionally, recruitment and retention plans are required as part of the application.

Competition for the Management and Operation of the National Center for Atmospheric Research
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
The National Science Foundation is soliciting proposals for the management and operation of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). NCAR, an NSF Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC), is a center of excellence supporting the atmospheric, geospace and broader Earth sciences communities. NCAR operates world-class observational facilities and computing infrastructure, conducts extensive in-house research, maintains vigorous programs of education, outreach, and the promotion of diversity, and cultivates extensive national and international collaborations. NCAR also carries out research and development on behalf of other organizations, most commonly other U.S. Government agencies. This work, which can only be undertaken if it supports the NCAR mission, currently accounts for approximately 30% of NCAR's total funding.
The awardee will work closely with NSF and the university community to ensure that NCAR continues to support, sustain and advance the atmospheric, geospace and related sciences, including the promotion of a diverse STEM workforce. The awardee will manage and develop the NCAR staff, buildings and facilities, and will promote an ambitious, coherent and inclusive program of research and education.
A single award will be made as a cooperative agreement with a duration of five years beginning on 1 October 2018. NSF may renew the award for an additional five-year term, subject to availability of funds and the awardee's satisfactory performance, and in compliance with the National Science Board Statement on Recompetition of Major Facilities (NSB 2015-45 or successor).
