Title
Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Awards
Agencies
Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU)
Description
The Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Awards provide seed money for research by junior faculty at Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) member institutions. These awards are intended to enrich the research and professional growth of young faculty and result in new funding opportunities.
Eligibility
Full-time assistant professors at ORAU member institutions within two years of their initial tenure track appointment at the time of application are eligible. If there is a question on eligibility, the ORAU Councilor makes the final decision.
Technical Areas
The research project must be in one of the following five disciplines:
Engineering and Applied Science
Life Sciences
Mathematics/Computer Sciences
Physical Sciences
Policy, Management, or Education
Number of Submissions
Each ORAU member councilor may submit up to two applications each year.
Funding Source and Duration
Funding is provided exclusively from non-federal monies by ORAU. The award amount provided by ORAU is $5,000. The applicant’s institution is required to match the award with at least an additional $5,000. This is a one-year grant (June 1 to May 31).
Funding Restrictions
This award can include funds for faculty summer salary, graduate student salary, travel, equipment, or other assistance relevant to the faculty member’s research. ORAU does not allow overhead charges or indirect costs on the award from ORAU or the university match.
Research Collaborations
Applicants are encouraged to develop research collaborations with government, private-sector, and other academic researchers. Such alliances enrich and extend not only the reach of your efforts, but the nation’s research enterprise, overall.
Because of the close working relationship between ORAU and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the Award Committee particularly encourages collaborative interaction with ORNL. Thus, substantive interdisciplinary research and inter-institutional research partnerships will be considered as very positive factors in the review process, and will increase chances for success.
Diverse Participant Population
ORAU is committed to the promotion of underrepresented groups in science and engineering.
Selection Process
Application reviews will be coordinated by ORAU councilors and conducted by scholars with expertise in the discipline of the application. Each application will receive three independent reviews. Final selection of awardees will be made by the ORAU Policy Committee.
Reporting
A final one- to two-page report must be submitted within one year of receipt of the award.

Title
Nominate Graduate Students to the 63rd Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
The Department of Energy (DOE), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Science Foundation (NSF) are pleased to announce that they will nominate and sponsor a maximum of 56 graduate students to attend the 63rd annual meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, Germany, from June 30 through July 5, 2013. We invite your institution to nominate up to two students for each sponsor to be considered for this very exciting opportunity.
Since 1951, Nobel Prize winners and students in chemistry, physics, and physiology or medicine have met annually in Lindau, located on Lake Constance in southwestern Germany. It is anticipated that some 550 students from more than 70 countries will attend the weeklong meeting in 2013. There are formal lectures in the morning, and the remainder of the day is set aside for the students to meet informally with the Nobel Laureate scientists, as well as with their fellow students from around the world. Information on the most recent meeting and comments from students who attended are available at http://www.orau.org/lindau/past-mtgs/default.shtml.
In 2013, the meeting will feature recipients of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. You may nominate students to attend this meeting who:
• are U.S. citizens currently enrolled at a university as full-time graduate students;
• have completed by June 2013 at least two academic years of graduate studies toward a doctoral degree in chemistry or in a related discipline, but not be planning a dissertation/thesis defense before December 31, 2013;
• be supported by and/or working on a project, grant, or fellowship sponsored by the DOE Office of Science (DOE-SC), NIH (NCI, NIAAA, NIDCR, NIEHS, or NIGMS only), or the NSF Directorate for Mathematical & Physical Sciences (NSF-MPS).
We are especially interested in receiving nominations from a diverse group of students, including women, minorities and people with disabilities.
DOE, NIH, and NSF are accepting a maximum total of six nominations, and will again partner this year with ORAU and Mars, Incorporated. Those organizations are separately announcing their nomination processes, but will also each accept two nominations as well. Please check http://www.orau.org/lindau for specific eligibility criteria of each sponsor.
The selection process for the Lindau Meeting occurs over three phases. The universities and National Laboratories complete the first phase by selecting up to two students per sponsor and submitting the nomination packet for each student. DOE, NIH, and NSF complete phase two by selecting the students to nominate to the Lindau Meeting. The final phase of selection is completed by the Lindau Meeting and its screening process. All three phases ultimately adhere to the Lindau Meeting’s selection criteria.
All nominations must be submitted online before Friday, December 14, 2012 at 4:00 pm, Eastern Time. Nominees will be notified by January 31, 2013 whether they have been selected. An information sheet on the program is enclosed. Further information about the program, including the Web site for submission of nominations, can be found online beginning at http://www.orau.org/lindau/.

Shared Instrumentation Grant Program (S10)
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
The ORIP Shared Instrument Grant (SIG) program encourages applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase or upgrade a single item of expensive, specialized, commercially available instrumentation or an integrated system that costs at least $100,000. The maximum award is $600,000. Types of instruments supported include, but are not limited to, confocal and electron microscopes, biomedical imagers, mass spectrometers, DNA sequencers, biosensors, cell-sorters, X-ray diffraction systems, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometers among others.
Applications will be accepted that request a single, commercially available instrument or integrated system which costs at least $100,000. There is no upper limit on the cost of the instrument, but the maximum award is $600,000. Since the cost of the various instruments will vary, it is anticipated that the size of the award also will vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend on the funds available for the SIG program.
NOTE: During the electronic submission process, a warning will be generated for any S10 with a budget in excess of $500,000. This warning can be ignored.

Simons Investigators in Physics
Agencies
Simons Foundation (Simons)
Description
The Simons Foundation invites nominations for the Simons Investigators in Mathematics, Physics, and Theoretical Computer Science program. Simons Investigators are outstanding theoretical scientists who receive long-term research support from the Simons Foundation. Rationale: The Simons Investigators program aims to provide a stable base of support for outstanding scientists, enabling them to undertake long-term investigations of the fundamental questions. Level and Duration of Funding: A Simons Investigator is appointed for an initial period of five years. Renewal for an additional five years is contingent upon the evaluation of scientific impact of the Investigator. Renewal beyond the 10-year period will not be considered. Appointments will begin September 1, 2013. An Investigator position may be interrupted and resumed for reasons that would normally justify a leave from a university such as illness, need to care for family members, or national service. Periods of sabbatical or research leave do not interrupt the Investigator position. Support may be withdrawn at any time at the discretion of the foundation, but it is expected that termination of the grant at times other than 5 or 10 years would occur only in very rare cases. An Investigator will receive research support in an amount initially set at $100,000 per year. An additional $10,000 per year will be provided to the Investigator’s department. The award is administered through the institution at which the Investigator is appointed, and this institution will receive 20% in indirect costs. Appropriate Expenses: The funding provided to the Investigator may be used at the Investigator’s discretion to support research expenses in the following categories: • Up to one month of summer salary • Teaching reduction only down to the level of one course per semester • Salary support for postdoctoral, graduate or undergraduate research assistants • Domestic or international travel • Short or long-term visitors • Research equipment Expenditures in other expense categories may be possible, but must be approved in advance by the foundation. Funding provided for the Investigator’s department should be used at the discretion of the department Chair to provide support for seminars, visitors, refreshments, and related expenditures that benefit the research activities of the department. The department is expected to provide appropriate administrative support to the Investigator. Eligibility: To be an Investigator, a scientist must be engaged in theoretical research in Mathematics, Physics or Computer Science and must have a primary appointment as a faculty member at a U.S. or Canadian institution with a Ph.D. program and not have previously been a Simons Investigator. The foundation reserves the right to determine eligibility but, typically, a ‘primary appointment’ is defined as one where an Investigator is a full time employee of an academic institution and with a teaching load that is comparable to that of other faculty members in the same department. Investigators may transfer their award to a new educational institution within the U.S. or Canada, subject to approval from the foundation and the old and new institutions. The award will be interrupted or terminated, at the foundation’s discretion, if an Investigator takes up a primary long-term position at a research Institute, National Laboratory, non-US or for-profit organization or accepts a major administrative responsibility that significantly reduces the time available for research.
