Career Development Program in Omics of Lung Diseases (K12)
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
The long-term objectives of this program are to develop multidisciplinary career development programs that will equip new MD and PhD (or equivalent) investigators with the knowledge and skills to apply pan-omics and integrated approaches to elucidating genomic and molecular bases of lung disease, including heterogeneity, key regulatory networks, and relevant disease biomarkers, with the goal of advancing understanding of lung disease pathobiology and lung disease personalized medicine applications. The required expertise should include bioinformatics, experience in utilizing data from large cohorts and electronic medical records, techniques of integrative genomics and systems analysis, along with expertise, or at least familiarity, with clinical research and pulmonary medicine. Given the multidisciplinary nature of the research training, proposing multiple PD(s)/PI(s) is encouraged.

CHRB 2013-2014 Grant Competition
Agencies
Commonwealth Health Research Board (CHRB)
Description
In 1997, the General Assembly passed and the Governor signed an act establishing the Commonwealth Health Research Board to provide financial support for human health research in the Commonwealth.
The Boards' primary responsibility is to make grants for human health research, especially for those efforts that have the potential of maximizing human health benefits for citizens of the Commonwealth.
The criteria for the awards are determined by the Board and include principles articulated in statute. Grants can be made to state agencies and institutions of higher education in Virginia and non-profit organizations that meet specific criteria.
Following its organization, the Board established fund guidelines, reviewed applications for funding, and made its first grants for the initiation of nine research projects. The Board solicits proposals on an annual basis for research funding to begin in July of each year.
Funds for the grants come from the Commonwealth Health Research Fund, which was established with proceeds following Trigon's evolution from non-profit organization to a for-profit company.
More Information
http://www.chrb.org/Guidelines%20&%20Forms.htm
Submission Limits
The CHRB will accept no more than 15 concept papers from any one agency, non-profit
organization, or institution of higher education per funding cycle. The limitation on the number
of concept papers which may be submitted by an Applicant Institution or Organization is
determined by that entity’s legal status. For example, if an entity is merely a center of an
institution of higher education, no PI may submit any concept paper on behalf of that center.
Any entity requesting to have concept papers submitted on its behalf must provide the CHRB
with a copy of the legal document establishing that entity as a separate or distinct legal entity.
The CHRB shall make the decision regarding whether an entity may have concept papers
submitted on its behalf and such decision is final. The CHRB Chair will provide written notice
of the CHRB’s decision within 14 business days of the CHRB Administrator’s receipt of the
request.
Cost Sharing:
For the FY 2013/2014 CHRB competition, applicants may request funding to support projects
over either a one-year or a two-year period. The maximum amount of a one-year award is $100,000.
The maximum amount for a two-year award is $200,000. However, no more than $100,000 will be
provided in either the first or second year.

ADVANCE: Increasing the Participation and Advancement of Women in Academic Science and Engineering Careers (ADVANCE) - Institutional Transformation
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
For many decades, an increasing number of women have obtained STEM doctoral degrees, however, women, particularly women of color, continue to be significantly underrepresented in almost all STEM academic positions. While the degree of underrepresentation varies among STEM disciplines, women's advancement to senior professorial ranks and leadership roles is an issue in all fields. The underrepresentation of women is also a critical issue for the nation, at large, as its need to develop a globally competitive and diverse workforce increases.
Research has shown that women's representation and advancement in academic STEM positions are affected by many external factors that are unrelated to their ability, interest and technical skills (Spencer, et al, 1999; Halpern and Tan, 2001; Hyde, 2005; National Academy of Sciences, 2007). Such factors include, but are not limited to: stereotype threat, societal impacts, organizational constraints of academic institutions; differential effect of work and family demands; implicit and explicit bias; and lack of women in academic leadership and decision-making positions. The cumulative effect of such diverse factors has been to create infrastructural barriers that impact the number of women entering, persisting and advancing in STEM careers.
Thus, the goal of the ADVANCE program is to develop systemic approaches to increase the representation and advancement of women in academic STEM careers, thereby contributing to the development of a more diverse science and engineering workforce. ADVANCE also has as its goal to seminally contribute to and inform the general knowledge base on gender equity in the academic STEM disciplines.

Innovation Corps - Regional Node Program (I-Corps Node)
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks to develop and nurture a national innovation ecosystem that builds upon fundamental research to guide the output of scientific discoveries closer to the development of technologies, products and processes that benefit society.
The National Science Foundation plans to build upon the I-Corps program and establish a National Innovation Network comprised of I-Corps Regional Nodes that will support the needs for innovation research and education. NSF is seeking to build a network of regional nodes that will work cooperatively to establish, utilize and sustain a national innovation ecosystem that further enhances the development of technologies, products and processes that benefit society. The interconnected nodes of this network may be diverse in research areas, resources, tools, programs, capabilities, and in geographic locations - while the network will have the flexibility to grow or reconfigure as needs arise. I-Corps Regional Nodes will foster understanding on how to: 1) identify, develop and support promising ideas that can generate value, 2) create and implement tools and resources that enhance our nation's innovation capacity, 3) gather, analyze, evaluate and utilize the data and insight resulting from the experiences of those participating in the I-Corps program and 4) share and leverage effective innovation practices on a national scale - to improve the quality of life for the U.S. citizenry.

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Funding Opportunity Announcement, Scholarship and Fellowship Education Grant, Fiscal Year 2013 - Scholarships
Agencies
United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)
Description
This program provides funding to support nuclear science, engineering, and related disciplines to develop a workforce capable of supporting the design, construction, operation, and regulation of nuclear facilities and the safe handling of nuclear materials. This announcement is for scholarships and fellowships.
As a condition for scholarships or fellowships, recipients must demonstrate satisfactory academic progress in their fields of study, as determined by criteria contained in this announcement and as established by the NRC. Consequently, NRC requires scholarship and fellowship recipients to serve six (6) months in nuclear-related employment for each full or partial year of academic support. The employment may be with NRC, other Federal agencies, State agencies, Department of Energy laboratories, nuclear-related industry, or academia in the recipients sponsored fields of study. Scholarship and Fellowship recipients who fail to satisfy the service agreement requirements of the program must reimburse the United States Government for the entire amount of the assistance provided them under the scholarship plus interest at a rate determined by the NRC. Recipients must continue to comply with eligibility requirements and institutions must continue to comply with public policy requirements and maintain adequate management systems throughout the period of support. (See http://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/grants/trade-svc-agreement.pdf Scholarship and Fellowship Program Service Agreement at http://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/grants.html) You cannot impose additional requirements to scholarship or fellowship recipients beyond the NRC Service Agreement. Service agreements must signed by recipients, institution program coordinator and NRC prior to receiving support.
