Art Works: Presenting & Multidisciplinary Works
Agencies
National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)
Description
“The Arts . . . belong to all the people of the United States†*
Art Works is the National Endowment for the Arts’ principal grants program. Through project-based funding, we support public engagement with, and access to, various forms of excellent art across the nation, the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, learning in the arts at all stages of life, and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life. Projects may be large or small, existing or new, and may take place in any part of the nation’s 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.
We encourage applications for artistically excellent projects that:
Celebrate America’s creativity and cultural heritage.
Invite a dialogue that fosters a mutual respect for the diverse beliefs and values of all persons and groups.
Enrich our humanity by broadening our understanding of ourselves as individuals and as a society.
*1965 Enabling Legislation for the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act of 1965
Grants generally will range from $10,000 to $100,000. No grants will be made below $10,000. Grants of $100,000 or more will be made only in rare instances, and only for projects that we determine demonstrate exceptional national or regional significance and impact. In the past few years, well over half of the agency's grants have been for amounts less than $25,000.
This area supports artistic works and events that present multiple disciplines, combine and/or integrate art forms, explore boundaries between art disciplines, fuse or transcend disciplines, and look to new forms of expression. We seek innovative performances and exhibitions that introduce new voices and perspectives to the community and programs that engage people to become lifelong arts and cultural participants or practitioners.
Projects should be multi- or cross-disciplinary in nature and may include work from the performing, visual, media, design, and literary arts. These projects can be for any stage of the artistic process including creation, commissioning, presentations, touring, training, residencies, and access to the arts. In addition, we also fund projects that provide services to artists and arts organizations. Projects that present or otherwise feature a single discipline (including but not limited to dance, literature, media arts, music, musical theater, theater, visual arts) should apply through that discipline.

Description
The over-arching goal of this NHLBI R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation’s biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs to reduce the burden of heart, lung, and blood diseases and sleep disorders. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on:
Courses for Skills Development in the principles and methods of contemporary biostatistics as employed in biomedical research today.
With this FOA, NHLBI invites applications for grants to develop, conduct, and evaluate summer courses in the principles and methods of contemporary biostatistics as employed in current biomedical research. The courses will introduce advanced undergraduates, recent graduates, and beginning graduate students to the field of biostatistics for the purpose of attracting new students to the field. The term “biostatistics†is used in the broad sense, including biomedical informatics and data science. NHLBI expects that the proposed courses will cover the fundamental concepts of probability, statistical reasoning, and inferential methods motivated, in part, by examples that include data collected in studies of heart, lung, and blood diseases and sleep disorders. Applicants may choose to focus on aspects of biostatistics that are within the areas of strength, interest and expertise of their faculty. It is anticipated that the courses will be taught during the summers of 2019, 2020, and 2021 with appropriate modifications or refinements following the first and second summer sessions.

Partnerships between Science and Engineering Fields and the NSF TRIPODS Institutes TRIPODS + X
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
The National Science Foundation's (NSF’s) Directorates for Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE) and Mathematical & Physical Sciences (MPS) recently launched the Transdisciplinary Research in Principles of Data Science (TRIPODS) Phase I program with the goal of promoting long-term, interdisciplinary research and training activities that engage theoretical computer scientists, statisticians, and mathematicians in developing the theoretical foundations of data science. Twelve TRIPODS Phase I Institutes were established in FY17 (see https://www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=242888).
The Partnerships between Science and Engineering Fields and the NSF TRIPODS Institutes (TRIPODS + X) solicitation seeks to expand the scope of the TRIPODS program beyond the foundations community by engaging researchers across other NSF disciplines and the TRIPODS research teams in collaborative activities. TRIPODS + X projects will foster relationships between researchers in science & engineering domains and foundational data scientists by leveraging existing NSF investments in the TRIPODS organizations. Working in concert with a TRIPODS organization, a TRIPODS + X project would focus on data-driven research challenges motivated by applications in one or more science and engineering domains or other activities aimed at building robust data science communities.

Shared Instrumentation Grant Program (S10)
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
The Shared Instrument Grant (SIG) Program encourages applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase or upgrade a single item of expensive, specialized, commercially available instruments or integrated systems. The minimum award is $50,000. There is no maximum price requirement; however, the maximum award is $600,000. Types of instruments supported include, but are not limited to: X-ray diffractometers, mass and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers, DNA and protein sequencers, biosensors, electron and light microscopes, cell sorters, and biomedical imagers. The purpose of this funding opportunity is to continue the Shared Instrumentation Grant (SIG) Program administered by ORIP. The objective of the Program is to make available to institutions expensive research instruments that can only be justified on a shared-use basis and that are needed for NIH-supported projects in basic, translational or clinical areas of biomedical and bio-behavioral research. The SIG Program provides funds to purchase or upgrade a single item of expensive, state-of-the-art, specialized, commercially available instrument or an integrated instrumentation system. An integrated instrumentation system is one in which the components, when used in conjunction with one another, perform a function that no single component could provide. The components must be dedicated to the system and not used independently.
Types of supported instruments include, but are not limited to: X-ray diffractometers, mass and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers, DNA and protein sequencers, biosensors, electron and light microscopes, cell sorters, and biomedical imagers. Applications for "stand alone" computer systems (supercomputers, computer clusters and data storage systems) will only be considered if the instrument is solely dedicated to biomedical research.
Instruments must be for research purposes only.
