Title
FY2017 BJA National Initiatives – Adjudications: Training and Technical Assistance to Support the Protection of Constitutional Rights Under the Sixth Amendment
Agencies
U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ)
Description
The purpose of this training and technical assistance program is to ensure that states and local government are provided with the capacity and tools necessary to meet the obligations established by the Sixth Amendment. BJA, through training and technical assistance (TTA), is providing state and local governments with research-based, data-driven information and resources, to secure the rights of the Sixth Amendment. The proposed approaches will also support pathways for evidence-based best practices to reach courts and defender systems at the state and local levels that support authentic adoption, implementation, and sustainment of effective approaches. To be successful, the strategies proposed must build capacity to collaborate across the criminal justice system in all jurisdictions to be served. Additionally, the applicant should partner with researchers to use the data and research to support the state and local resources sustaining those practices found to be effective. This solicitation also seeks proposed strategies to disseminate information about practices, structures, and models that can be replicated and made available through training, technical assistance, and strategic planning services to courts and defender systems at state and local levels.
BJA is seeking providers for the following three categories of activities:
(1) Strategic Planning Services to state and local governments to address Sixth Amendment issues within their jurisdictions, using data and research to develop proven strategies in key areas that strengthen capacity to uphold these rights.
(2) Enhancement of Defense Systems and Right to Counsel training and technical assistance, including identifying and disseminating best practices, structures, or models and assisting state and local governments with evaluating, adopting, and implementing systems consistent with securing the Right to Counsel requirement.
(3) Sixth Amendment Fellowship for a practitioner who possesses significant Sixth Amendment rights experience to assist BJA in engaging with the field to assess and respond to areas of need.

National Endowment for the Arts Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge for High School Students
Agencies
National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)
Description
The National Endowment for the Arts’ Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge for High School Students (the “Songwriting Challengeâ€) began in 2016 as an opportunity for students in three cities to showcase their songwriting talents and compete for the opportunity to participate in a mentorship and final competition in New York City. Working alone or in collaboration with one other student, contestants are challenged to create the lyrics and music for an original song that could appear in a musical theater show.
Now, the 2017-2018 Songwriting Challenge is being expanded to reach any eligible high school student across the United States. Students will compete for the opportunity to be one of six regional1 finalists traveling to New York City for the Finalist Weekend in Spring 2018 to:
• Learn more about songwriting and sharpen their songwriting skills;
• Engage with professional musicians, singers, songwriters, and producers through an intensive songwriting mentorship;
• Experience their original song performed by professional musicians and singers; and
• Compete for the title of National Champion.
During the Finalist Weekend, each student will be paired with a songwriting mentor with whom they will further develop their song in preparation for a final performance and judging. Students also will participate in learning sessions with musical theater industry professionals and attend a Broadway musical performance.
The National Endowment for the Arts is seeking an organization to coordinate and administer the Songwriting Challenge. The Cooperator will manage all aspects of the program, coordinate regional and national competitions, and develop and disseminate curricular materials and information about the program to potential applicants through partners such as regional, state, and local arts agencies; arts service organizations; music, musical theater, and theater organizations; and schools or other educational programs around the country.

Title
OJJDP FY 17 Changing Minds: Professional Development and Public Education to Address Children Exposed to Violence and Childhood Trauma
Agencies
U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ)
Description
OJJDP seeks to accelerate and build on past efforts, establishing cadres of professionals skilled at delivering training to their colleagues; reaching additional individuals and organizations through modalities such as web-based, continuing education certification and self-instruction training; and extending the public awareness campaign. This program is designed to broaden understanding of children’s exposure to violence by individuals, especially law enforcement professionals and educators, and improve their response to children exposed to violence.
OJJDP recognizes it is most feasible to support curriculum development tailored to the professions that work with or regularly encounter children. While OJJDP aims to ensure that the content of the various supported curricula aligns, OJJDP has learned that education and training programs are best received and most effective when developed with those professionals (e.g., law enforcement, teachers, judges) to whom they are directed. OJJDP also recognizes that localized and tailored training for those who will then commit to train others is a more flexible and cost-effective strategy than funding a limited number of trainings for groups of professionals.
The selected applicants will therefore work collaboratively with OJJDP through cooperative agreements to continue to strengthen the ability of educators, law enforcement, and associated youth justice professionals to identify and respond to children and youth who have been exposed to violence and to enhance the extent and impact of the Changing Minds National Public Awareness Campaign on Children Exposed to Violence. Award recipients are required to coordinate approved efforts funded under this solicitation with other ongoing efforts to address children exposed to violence, as identified after award by OJJDP.
Category 1: Master Trainings/Training of Trainers on CEV and childhood trauma for educators and educational administrators in public school and correctional and alternative education settings based on the Changing Minds K-12 training institute
Category 2: Master Trainings/Training of Trainers on CEV and childhood trauma for law enforcement based on the Enhancing Law Enforcement Response to Children Exposed to Violence curriculum and toolkit.
Category 3: Changing Minds Public Awareness Campaign expansion and enhancement—phase 2

Museums Empowered – FY17 Notice of Funding Opportunity
Agencies
Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
Description
Museums for America (MFA) grants support projects that strengthen the ability of an individual museum to serve its public. Museums Empowered: Professional Development and Capacity Building Opportunities for Museums is a special MFA initiative to provide professional development and capacity building opportunities for eligible museums.
As centers of innovation and discovery, as well as catalysts of community revitalization, museums are at the forefront of change in our communities. Like any other institution, museums need to remain dynamic to respond to fast-evolving technological advances and changing demographics. Museums also need to generate and share outcomes-based data and demonstrate results of their community impact efforts. In addition they need to develop sustainable organizational structures and strategies for continued growth and vitality. Professional development is critical for museums to deliver on these areas of need.
IMLS encourages applicants to invest in the professional development of museum staff, volunteers, and interns to enhance their skills and ensure the highest standards in all aspects of museum operations. This includes, but is not limited to, creating opportunities to encourage a more inclusive and diverse museum professional and volunteer workforce, and building the skills of museum staff at all levels with emphasis on the development of the next generation of museum professionals.
To support and empower museums of all sizes and disciplines in responding to the evolving needs of the museum profession and changes in their communities, this MFA special initiative has four areas of focus for professional development and capacity building:
Digital Technology
Diversity and Inclusion
Evaluation
Organizational Management
Potential projects will address one of these four priority areas and help strengthen the capability of an individual museum to better serve its public. Projects will utilize comprehensive strategies and frameworks to support professional development and capacity building. Projects should cross-cut various departments and result in systemic change within the institutions.

Description
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites grant applications for Environmental Health Sciences Core Centers (EHS CC). As intellectual hubs for environmental health research, the EHS CC is expected to be the thought leaders for the field and advance the goals of the NIEHS Strategic Plan (http://www.niehs.nih.gov/about/strategicplan/). The Core Centers provide critical research infrastructure, shared facilities, services and /or resources, to groups of investigators conducting environmental health sciences research. An EHS CC enables researchers to conduct their independently-funded individual and/or collaborative research projects more efficiently and/or more effectively. The broad overall goal of an EHS CC is to identify and capitalize on emerging issues that advance improving the understanding of the relationships among environmental exposures, human biology, and disease. The EHS CC supports community engagement and translational research as key approaches to improving public health.
