Coordinating Center for Barrett's Esophagus Translational Research Network (BETRNet)(U24)
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits applications for the Coordinating Center for the Barrett’s Esophagus Translational Research Network (BETRNet). The BETRNet is an NCI program established to address the rising incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma in the United States and to energize this field of research. Specifically, the program seeks a better understanding of the biology of esophageal adenocarcinoma and its precursor lesion, Barrett’s esophagus, as the foundation for validated preventive measures that would improve patient management. BETRNet will include three to four multi-institutional trans-disciplinary Research Centers (to be supported by a companion FOA, RFA-CA-16-006) and a single Coordinating Center (to be supported by this FOA). The main function of the Coordinating Center is to integrate and facilitate trans-disciplinary research across the BETRNet program focusing on the following main areas: network interactions and collaborations, participation in the patient registry-virtual biorepository, and participation in cross-BETRNet pilot projects. A goal of the patient registry-virtual biorepository is to function as a centralized shared resource for the entire program to advance research in this area.

Tissue Chip Testing Centers: Validating Microphysiological Systems (U24)
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications for Tissue Chip Testing Center(s) (TCTC) that will provide resources and infrastructure for the validation of tissue chips being developed as part of the NIH Tissue Chip (TC) Program or NIH Microphysiological Systems (MPS) Program. The MPS program supports a consortium of investigators developing accurate cellular and organ microsystems representative of human physiology for the evaluation of drug efficacy and toxicity (RFA-RM-11-022). The developed in vitro MPS platforms are representative of major organs and tissues in the human body and need to be validated for their predictive capabilities in the assessment of biomarkers, and the bioavailability, efficacy, and toxicity of therapeutic agents prior to entry into clinical trials. Validation of the tissue chips will be conducted through the TCTC that will be responsible for the testing of a select group of compounds using predefined assays and biomarkers according to pharmaceutical industry standards, and for the integration of the data into a public database.

The over-arching goal of this NIGMS R25 program is to support educational activities that enhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral and clinical research workforce. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Courses for Skills Development and Research Experiences.
The Bridges to Doctorate Program is intended to provide these activities to master's level students to increase transition to and completion of PhDs in biomedical sciences. This program requires partnerships between master's degree-granting institutions with doctorate degree-granting institutions. Applicants should directly address how the set of activities will complement and/or enhance the training of a diverse workforce that also meets the nation’s biomedical and clinical research needs by discussing 1) the rationale underlying the balance of effort and resources dedicated to each activity; 2) how the activities integrate; and 3) objective indicators that can measure the effectiveness of the program. A program application must include each activity, and describe how they will be synergized to make a comprehensive program. Additionally, recruitment and retention plans are expected as part of the application.

Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers (MRSECs) provide sustained support of interdisciplinary materials research and education of the highest quality while addressing fundamental problems in science and engineering. MRSECs address research of a scope and complexity requiring the scale, synergy, and interdisciplinarity provided by a campus-based research center. They support materials research infrastructure in the United States, promote active collaboration between universities and other sectors, including industry and international institutions, and contribute to the development of a national network of university-based centers in materials research, education, and facilities. A MRSEC may be located at a single institution, or may involve multiple institutions in partnership.
More Information
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2016/nsf16545/nsf16545.htm
Submission Limits
Only one MRSEC preliminary proposal may be submitted by any one organization as the lead institution in this competition. An institution proposing research in several groups should submit a single MRSEC proposal with multiple Interdisciplinary Research Groups (IRGs). A MRSEC proposal must contain a minimum of 2 IRGs and a maximum of 3 IRGs. The IRGs in a center may be thematically related, or they may address different aspects of materials research. A single center at an organization allows efficient usage of resources, including common infrastructure, and better coordination of education and other activities of the center.
Institutions that were awarded a MRSEC in the FY 2014 competition as the lead institution are not eligible to submit a MRSEC proposal as a lead institution in this competition.

Humanities Access Grants
Agencies
National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)
Description
Humanities Access grants help support capacity building for humanities programs that benefit one or more of the following groups: youth, communities of color, and economically disadvantaged populations.
Humanities Access grants establish or augment term endowments (that is, endowments whose funds are entirely expended over the course of a set time period) to provide funding for existing programs at institutions such as public libraries, local and regional museums, historical societies, community colleges, HBCUs and tribal colleges, Hispanic-serving institutions, archival repositories, and other cultural organizations. Humanities Access grants are intended to seed longer-term endowment-building efforts.
Programs supported by Humanities Access grants might include, for example
ï‚· a summer project for teens at a local historical society;
ï‚· internships for Native American students at a tribal museum; or
ï‚· a Clemente course at a homeless shelter organized by a community college.
Humanities Access Grants offer two years of match-based funding to be expended through a term endowment over the final three years of the five-year grant period. Humanities Access grant funds should not be used to replace existing program funds. Instead, the grant should expand or enhance an existing exemplary humanities program.
Institutions that have never received an NEH grant and small to mid-sized institutions are especially encouraged to apply.
Award recipients might use this fund to support ongoing humanities programmatic costs such as the following:
ï‚· salaries and benefits for humanities personnel;
ï‚· acquisitions for collections;
ï‚· public programming and outreach expenses;
ï‚· lecture or exhibition series;
ï‚· media or digitization costs;
ï‚· faculty, teacher, and staff development;
ï‚· research fellowships;1
ï‚· visiting researchers, scholars, or consultants;
ï‚· programs for preserving and conserving collections; or
ï‚· strengthening the technological infrastructure for humanities projects.
Note, though, that activities like these are eligible for support only if they benefit one or more of the following groups: youth, communities of color, and economically disadvantaged populations.

Innovation Corps- National Innovation Network Sites Program (I-Corps Sites)
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks to develop and nurture a national innovation ecosystem that builds upon research to guide the output of scientific discoveries closer to the development of technologies, products and processes that benefit society.
In order to contribute to a national innovation ecosystem, NSF established the NSF Innovation Corps Sites Program (NSF I-Corps Sites). Sites are funded at academic institutions, having already existing innovation or entrepreneurial units, to enable them to:
Nurture students and/or faculty who are engaged in projects having the potential to be transitioned into the marketplace. I-Corps Sites will provide infrastructure, advice, resources, networking opportunities, training and modest funding to enable groups to transition their work into the marketplace or into becoming I-Corps Team applicants.
Develop formal, active, local innovation ecosystems that contribute to a larger, national network of mentors, researchers, entrepreneurs and investors. Networking is an essential component of all of NSF's I-Corps activities – local and national networking activities help advance the goals of I-Corps and contribute to local and national ecosystems for innovation.
The purpose of an I-Corps Site is to nurture and support multiple, local teams to transition their ideas, devices, processes or other intellectual activities into the marketplace.
