Generously funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation since January 2017, the program will run nine competitions from January 2017 to April 2021 and will award a total of $4.5 million. Awards range from $10,000 to $50,000 and cover costs of preservation reformatting for fragile and/or obsolete time-based media content by qualified external service providers. Title ENERGY INNOVATION HUB PROGRAM: RESEARCH TO ENABLE NEXT-GENERATION BATTERIES AND ENERGY STORAGE Agencies Department of Energy (DOE) Description The DOE SC program in Basic Energy Sciences (BES) hereby announces its interest in receiving new applications for Energy Innovation Hub projects pursuing multi-investigator, cross-disciplinary fundamental research to address emerging new directions as well as long-standing challenges for the next generation of rechargeable batteries and related electrochemical energy storage technologies. Electrochemical energy storage is typically viewed as the bidirectional interconversion of electricity and chemical potential energy using electrochemistry for the purpose of storing electrical energy for later use, with lithium (Li)-ion and lead acid batteries being representative of the current generation of electrochemical energy storage. Discovery and scientific exploration of new battery chemistries, materials, and architectures for energy storage are encouraged. Research on electrolyzer/fuel cell combinations using hydrogen or hydrocarbons as the chemical storage media are supported elsewhere within DOE programs and are specifically excluded from this FOA. Regardless of materials and electrochemical processes involved, the focus must be on fundamental scientific concepts and understanding for the next generation of batteries and electrochemical energy storage. The proposed fundamental electrochemical energy storage research should impact a broad range of topics, including decarbonization of transportation and incorporation of clean energy into the electricity grid, especially for long duration energy storage (LDES). Two recent DOE-wide activities involving batteries and related electrochemical energy storage are the Energy Storage Grand Challenge and the Long Duration Storage Energy EarthshotTM. Electrochemical energy storage technology has the potential to accelerate full decarbonization of the electric grid, and the Long Duration Storage Shot establishes a target to reduce the cost of grid-scale energy storage by 90% for systems that deliver 10+ hours of duration within the decade. More broadly the Energy Storage Grand Challenge provides a programmatic framework that supports the vision to develop and domestically manufacture energy storage technologies, including batteries and other electrochemical energy storage, that can meet all U.S. market demands by 2030. Given the foundational role of basic scientific research in providing the needed technology options to support these critical goals, Energy Innovation Hub investments in scientific discovery and exploration to advance the fundamental understanding of electrochemical energy storage processes, materials, and systems are needed. Progress in the fundamental science topics described in the 2017 Basic Research Needs for Next Generation Electrochemical Energy Storage Workshop will drive innovation in batteries and advance development of new and effective energy storage technologies needed for a decarbonized economy by 2050. Title Accelerating Research Translation (ART) Agencies National Science Foundation (NSF) Description The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks to increase the scale and pace of advancing discoveries made while conducting academic research into tangible solutions that benefit the public. This is the primary aim of the "Accelerating Research Translation" (ART) program. Specifically, the primary goals of this program are to build capacity and infrastructure for translational research at U.S. Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) and to enhance their role in regional innovation ecosystems. In addition, this program seeks to effectively train graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in translational research, benefiting them across a range of career options. A particular intent of ART is to support IHEs that want to build the necessary infrastructure to boost the overall institutional capacity to accelerate the pace and scale of translation of fundamental research outcomes into practice by supporting the development of a range of activities essential for this activity. The ART program is not intended to support IHEs that already have high levels of translational research activity as part of their R&D enterprise (as noted by their number of invention disclosures, patents issued, start-ups, licenses/options, revenue from royalties, the overall volume of industry-funded research, broad adoption of research outputs by communities or constituents, etc.). Such institutions are encouraged to become part of the ART network as valuable collaborators, providing expertise in building the necessary infrastructure for translational research at other IHEs responding to this solicitation. The ART program is also not intended as a resource for conducting additional fundamental research. See sections II and VI of this solicitation for additional information. This solicitation seeks proposals that enable IHE-based teams to propose a blend of: (1) activities that will help build and/or strengthen the institutional infrastructure to sustainably grow the institutional capacity for research translation in the short and long terms; (2) educational/training opportunities, especially for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, to become entrepreneurs and/or seek useinspired and/or translational research-oriented careers in the public and/or private sectors; and (3) specific, translational research activities that offer immediate opportunities for transition to practice to create economic and/or societal impact. The funded teams will form a nationwide network of 'ART Ambassadors' who will champion the cause of translational research. Title Scholarships in STEM Network (S-STEM-Net) Agencies National Science Foundation (NSF) Description Through this solicitation, NSF seeks to foster a network of S-STEM stakeholders and further develop the infrastructure needed to generate and disseminate new knowledge, successful practices and effective design principles arising from NSF S-STEM projects nationwide. The ultimate vision of the legislation governing the S-STEM parent program[1] (and of the current S-STEM-Net solicitation) is that all Americans, regardless of economic status, should be able to contribute to the American innovation economy if they so desire. To support collaboration within the S-STEM network, NSF will fund several S-STEM Research Hubs (S-STEM-Hub). The S-STEM Network (S-STEM-Net) will collaborate to create synergies and sustain a robust national ecosystem consisting of multi-sector partners supporting domestic low-income STEM students in achieving their career goals, while also ensuring access, inclusion, and adaptability to changing learning needs. The Hubs will investigate evolving barriers to the success of this student population. It will also disseminate the context and circumstances by which interventions and practices that support graduation of domestic low-income students (both undergraduate and graduate) pursuing careers in STEM are successful. Title Enabling Partnerships to Increase Innovation Capacity (EPIIC) Agencies National Science Foundation (NSF) Description The purpose of this solicitation is to broaden participation in innovation ecosystems that advance emerging technologies (e.g., advanced manufacturing, advanced wireless, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, quantum information science, semiconductors and microelectronics) by supporting capacity-building efforts at institutions of higher education (IHEs) interested in growing external partnerships. Creation of this program is motivated by the commitment of the National Science Foundation (NSF), including the newly established NSF Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships (TIP), to accelerating scientific and technological innovation nationwide and empowering all Americans to participate in the U.S. research and innovation enterprise. Establishing more inclusive innovation ecosystems will require broad networks of partners working together in support of use-inspired research; the translation of such research to practice or commercial application; and the development of a skilled workforce. The NSF Regional Innovation Engines (NSF Engines) program, housed within the TIP Directorate, seeks to grow inclusive innovation ecosystems around the country. Growing such ecosystems will only be successful if all interested IHEs within a region are able to participate and contribute their unique set of skills and expertise. However, NSF appreciates many Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), Predominantly Undergraduate Institutions (PUIs), and two-year institutions lack the infrastructure and resources needed to grow external partnerships and effectively contribute to innovation ecosystems, and thus are currently unable to effectively engage with the NSF Engines program. This solicitation aims to provide MSIs, PUIs, and two-year institutions with limited or no research capacity (see Section IV for details) with the support necessary to become equitable partners with teams competing under the current and subsequent NSF Engines program funding opportunities. Importantly, participation in this solicitation is not predicated on an existing partnership with organizations submitting an NSF Engines proposal. Title AMMTO-BTO and OE FY22 Multi-Topic FOA: Subtopic 1.2: Harsh Environment Materials Agencies Department of Energy (DOE) Description Harsh service environments (and the associated materials durability challenges) are common across multiple industrial applications and energy sectors. The objective of this sub-topic is foster RD&D to create new materials with improved properties in harsh operating environments. AMMTO considers harsh environments to include high temperature and/or high mechanical load, often in combination with aggressive chemical environments; also high pressure, high wear, undersea, hydrogen environments, and nuclear environments. AMMTO’s drivers for research in such harsh environment materials include both its competitiveness mission and its mission to improve Americans’ quality of life by reducing life cycle energy, resource use, and impacts. Harsh environment materials include those used in manufacturing and in other applications also of interest to AMMTO such as clean energy, heat recovery, and low-carbon process heating technologies. Such new materials also can include high temperature ceramic matrix materials for composite components (including silicon carbide) whose fabrication is enabled by polymer-based precursors for infiltration of SiC preforms. This sub-topic also seeks proposals demonstrating key applications of harsh environment materials such as integrated energy systems applied to decarbonized steel-making and refractory materials, including net zero or high-temperature hydrogen-based decarbonization.
