Title
Incidence of Community Associated Influenza and Other Respiratory Infections in the United States
Agencies
Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)
Description
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
The purpose of this FOA is to estimate the incidence and etiology of respiratory infections in a community-based cohort and define the attributable fractions of influenza and non-influenza respiratory viruses. The objectives of this program are as follows. The applicant must respond to all three objectives:
1. Enroll a cohort of households within a predefined community and follow individuals prospectively to determine the annual incidence of ARI and ILI. Sites should develop a mechanism, web-based or otherwise, to conduct surveillance in enrolled households on a weekly basis to determine when ARI or ILI occurs. It is recommended that routine home visits also be made on a monthly basis. Sites should be able to enroll 200 to 300 households, within six months, from which incidence can be calculated by age group. To account for seasonal differences in respiratory infection incidence and etiology, participants should be enrolled for an entire year.
2. Identify the etiology of ARI and ILI in the enrolled cohort over time by developing a mechanism to collect respiratory specimens (i.e., nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs) from ill persons in households and performing etiologic testing with modern molecular diagnostic tests to characterize the annual variation in the circulation of influenza and other respiratory viruses. Modern molecular diagnostic tests for etiologic testing should be included to increase the ability to detect respiratory viral pathogens and better characterize genetic variations. The application should describe in detail the viral culture, RT-PCR, and other laboratory methods to be used and provide evidence of competency in the use of these methods, and a system to demonstrate the quality of the laboratory methods and results. If laboratory testing cannot be performed on site by the recipient, the recipient should outline in their proposal the method for accomplishing the testing of specimens.
3. Characterize individual and household factors associated with the incidence and transmission of respiratory viral infections. Sites should collect supplemental information (e.g., demographic, clinical, socioeconomic, etc.) on participating individuals and households.

Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship Program (IGERT)
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program has been developed to meet the challenges of educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists and engineers with interdisciplinary backgrounds, deep knowledge in chosen disciplines, and technical, professional, and personal skills. The program is intended to establish new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. It is also intended to facilitate diversity in student participation and preparation, and to contribute to a world-class, broadly inclusive, and globally engaged science and engineering workforce.
Building upon the IGERT platform, the purpose of this IGERT solicitation is to support new models in graduate education in which students are engaged in an environment that supports innovation to learn through hands-on experience how their own research may contribute in new ways to benefit society and to learn the processes for the successful implementation of such contributions.

• Potential engagement of others, especially students
• Probability of a long-term collaboration
• New or enhanced collaboration (proposed partners have no strong current ties)
• Well-defined outcome(s), such as a proposal to an identified opportunity, a white paper in anticipation of future funding, or a publication as a result of data collected during the event.
How to Apply
Please complete the application form below.

Coordination of the NSF-Census Research Network (NCRN)
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
National Science Foundation
Directorate for Social, Behavioral, & Economic Sciences (SBE)
Division of Social and Economic Sciences
In fiscal year 2011, NSF made eight awards in response to proposals submitted to the NSF-Census Research Network Program Solicitation (NCRN; NSF 10-621). A list of awards is available at: http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=503587&org=SES&from=home.
This joint funding opportunity was supported by NSF and the U.S. Bureau of the Census to establish a set of research nodes conducting interdisciplinary research and educational activities on methodological questions of interest and significance to the broader research community and to the Federal Statistical System, particularly the U.S. Bureau of the Census. These activities are expected to advance both fundamental and applied knowledge as well as further the education of current and future generations of researchers in research skills of relevance to the statistical measurement of economic units, households, and persons and their behaviors.
The purpose of this Dear Colleague Letter is to advise you about funding opportunities at the National Science Foundation for the research community to propose a coordination body for these new projects. Coordinating responsibilities must include, but are not necessarily limited to the following:
* Facilitate communication, information sharing, and collaboration among researchers within the network.
* Facilitate interactions with relevant members of the community outside of the network.
* Organize the biannual meetings of the research network leaders as specified in the NCRN Program Solicitation.
* Facilitate node interactions with staff from the U.S. Census Bureau and other relevant Federal Statistical System agencies.
* Host and maintain a web site for public dissemination of research findings.
This is not a new program. Except as modified here, submitted proposals should follow the guidelines outlined in the NSF Research Coordination Networks (RCN) Program Solicitation (NSF 11-531). Investigators should submit their proposal via FastLane to the Methodology, Measurement, and Statistics (MMS) Program by March 1, 2012. The MMS Program plans to make one NCRN coordination award. The award is expected to be five years in duration, with a maximum total budget of $750,000.

Title
Partnerships for Innovation (PFI) - Building Innovation Capacity (BIC)
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
National prosperity today is more dependent on research and technology advances and since the product development cycle in all industrial sectors is more rapid than before, NSF's role of supporting discovery research across all fields of science and engineering is closer and more relevant to economic development at this time than at any time in our past.
By establishing and expanding partnerships, research from institutions of higher education can be translated into innovation. Thus, the impact of research can be increased by moving it to realistic deployment, linking new knowledge to economic growth and other societal benefits. Partnerships with participation from science, engineering, education, the private sector and government can accelerate the process of innovation--the transformation of scientific and technological advances into new products, processes, systems, and services. In turn, new jobs are produced, wealth created, and the standard of living and quality of life worldwide are improved.
The NSF Partnerships for Innovation (PFI) program is an umbrella for two complementary subprograms: one of which involves an earlier stage that focuses on building innovation capacity and the other involves a later stage that focuses on the acceleration of innovative research. The former emphasizes the transformation of knowledge to market-accepted innovations created by the research and education enterprise, while the latter emphasizes the translation of research to commercialization by NSF-funded research alliances. A research alliance is defined as a research partnership formed for mutual benefit, and funded by NSF, between/amongst universities and other entities. In the final analysis, both programs, while focusing on different stages are concerned with the movement of academic research into the marketplace.
* The PI cannot be a PI on a Partnership for Innovation award that will be active after June 1, 2012.
* One of the Co-PIs must be a Senior Administrator (at the level of dean or above), who has a demonstrated commitment to knowledge transfer of university research. The senior administrator must have an active role that is explicitly described, along with a specification of a time commitment on the project.
