Description
The Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) is designed to improve the condition of scientific and engineering equipment for research and research training in the nation's academic institutions.
This program seeks to improve the quality and expand the scope of research and research training in science and engineering, and to foster the integration of research and education by providing instrumentation for research-intensive learning environments. The MRI program encourages the development and acquisition of research instrumentation for shared inter- or intra-organizational use and in concert with private sector partners.
The MRI program assists in the acquisition or development of major research instrumentation by organizations that is, in general, too costly for support through other NSF programs. Proposals may be for a single instrument, a large system of instruments, or multiple instruments that share a common or specific research focus.

Submission Limits
An institution may submit up to three proposals: at least one of three proposals submitted from an institution must be for instrument development. However, all three proposals may be for instrument development.

Description
The Pfizer Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants in infectious diseases are designed to to support the career development of talented junior physician-scientists. This educational grant is nationally competitive, and chosen by an independent academic advisory board of recognized leaders in infectious diseases. Award funding is primarily intended for salary support. The applicant must demonstrate that at least 75% of his or her professional time will be devoted to research. Proposals involving head-to-head clinical trials or veterinary health will not be considered. Interdisciplinary and translational research proposals are encouraged.

In order to identify outstanding scientists at the formative stages of their careers and assist them in launching an innovative research program with a defined impact in the environmental health sciences, the National Institute on Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is establishing a program of R01 research grants intended for researchers who have not received their first R01 research grant. It is designed to be highly competitive, and only a limited number will be awarded per year. Research programs supported by this announcement seek to promote career advancement of the most highly creative and promising new scientists who intend to make a long-term career commitment to research in the mainstream of the environmental health sciences, and bring innovative, ground-breaking research initiatives and thinking to bear on the problems of how environmental exposures affect human biology, human pathophysiology and human disease.

Description
The National Science Foundation (NSF) announces a program on collaborative research and education in the area of active nanostructures and nanosystems, and on the long-term social change associated with these innovations. The goal of this program is to support fundamental research and catalyze synergistic science and engineering research and education in several emerging areas of nanoscale science and technology, including: fundamental nanoscale phenomena and processes in active nanostructures; nanosystems with improved functionality and new architectures; hierarchical nanomanufacturing; and long-term societal and educational implications of scientific and technological advances on the nanoscale. This solicitation will provide support for Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Teams (NIRT) and Nanoscale Exploratory Research (NER).
A related program solicitation will focus on Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education (NUE) for FY 2006. Other research and education projects in nanoscale science and engineering will continue to be supported in the relevant Programs and Divisions
Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Teams (NIRT): NIRT proposals may be submitted by a single organization or a group of organizations consisting of a lead organization in partnership with one or more partner organizations. Principal investigators are encouraged to form synergistic collaborations among researchers, and with private and public sector organizations, government laboratories, and scientists and engineers at foreign organizations where appropriate, though no funds will be provided to those organizations. At least three PIs and co-PIs, all with funded time committed in the budget, must be listed on the cover page or on the budget page of the proposal. The maximum number of PIs and co-PIs is five; other participants may be listed in the project summary and on the budget pages.
Nanoscale Exploratory Research (NER): Proposals may be submitted by U.S. academic institutions with undergraduate and/or Ph.D. programs in disciplines usually supported by NSF. Research may be proposed by individual investigators or by small groups from academic institutions. Synergistic collaborations among researchers, and collaborations or partnerships with private or public sector organizations or government laboratories are encouraged when appropriate. Prospective proposers are encouraged to contact one of the program officers listed in this solicitation for additional guidance on the suitability of their NER submission if there are questions.

A. Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Teams (NIRT): An organization – a university, or a campus in a multi-campus university -- may submit no more than two (2) proposals on which it is the lead organization in response to this solicitation. The same organization may be a collaborative partner in any number of other multi-organization group proposals in which it is not the lead.
B. Nanoscale Exploratory Research (NER): An organization – a university or a campus in a multi-campus university -- may submit no more than two (2) proposals on which it is the lead organization in response to this NER solicitation. An exception is made for an additional NER proposal that may be submitted in "Societal and Educational Issues Associated with Long-term Research Science and Engineering Advances" (see Research and Education Themes in Section II). At least one NER proposal submitted by an organization must have a P.I. or co-P.I. at the level of assistant professor or equivalent.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has initiated a major program to increase the cure rate and prevention of leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. The purpose of this initiative is to bring together research programs that are focused on any aspect of these diseases in order to foster interactions and cooperation, and to enhance interdisciplinary research among the participants. The center grant will also support scientific core laboratories required by the component research programs, so as to provide access to key high technology in order to support facilities that might not otherwise be available to individual research programs.
The research may be fundamental or applied, or an integrated combination of the two approaches. Basic research tied to a related translational research project is encouraged but not mandatory. The most promising ideas and the likelihood of a significant impact on the morbidity and mortality of these diseases will be viewed favorably, regardless of the particular approach. The society wants these awards to make a difference in the lives of those afflicted or those yet to be afflicted. Although there is no limit on the number of projects, too large a program may not meet the requirements, be unwieldly, and have inadequate project funding. Quality, not quantity, is the principal objective of the program.
