Description
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has initiated a major program to increase the cure rate and prevention of leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. The purpose of this initiative is to bring together research programs that are focused on any aspect of these diseases in order to foster interactions and cooperation, and to enhance interdisciplinary research among the participants. The center grant will also support scientific core laboratories required by the component research programs, so as to provide access to key high technology in order to support facilities that might not otherwise be available to individual research programs.
The research may be fundamental or applied, or an integrated combination of the two approaches. Basic research tied to a related translational research project is encouraged but not mandatory. The most promising ideas and the likelihood of a significant impact on the morbidity and mortality of these diseases will be viewed favorably, regardless of the particular approach. The society wants these awards to make a difference in the lives of those afflicted or those yet to be afflicted. Although there is no limit on the number of projects, too large a program may not meet the requirements, be unwieldly, and have inadequate project funding. Quality, not quantity, is the principal objective of the program.

Description
Through annual fellowships, the Foundation supports scientific research in order to help finding a cure for leukemia and improving the treatment and quality of life of leukemia patients. Initially, applications will be accepted for one fellowship to provide funding of 50,000 US dollars for one year, renewable yearly for two additional years upon satisfactory performance. Candidates must hold an M.D. or Ph.D. degree and have completed at least three years postdoctoral training but must be less than ten years post their first doctoral degree when the award begins.

Description
Taking advantage of recent developments in genomics, immunology, and other areas, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund's (BWF's) Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease program provides an opportunity to bring aggressive, multidisciplinary approaches to investigating infectious disease.
The goal of the program is to provide new opportunities for accomplished investigators still early in their careers to study pathogenesis, with a focus on the intersection of human and pathogen biology. The program is intended to shed light on the overarching issues of how human hosts handle infectious challenge. The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is particularly interested in work focused on the host, as well as host-pathogen studies originating in viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasite systems. Studies in this area may have their root in the pathogen, but the focus of the work should be on the effects on the host at the cellular or systemic levels. Excellent animal models of human disease are within the scope of the program.
The awards are intended to give recipients the freedom and flexibility to pursue new avenues of inquiry and higher-risk research projects that hold potential for advancing significantly the biochemical, pharmacological, immunological, and molecular biological understanding of how infectious agents and the human body interact. Genetic, biochemical, and immunological approaches are all appropriate.

A U.S. or Canadian institution—including its medical school, graduate schools, and all affiliated hospitals and research institutes—may nominate up to two candidates. To encourage applications from veterinarians, institutions that nominate a researcher who holds the D.V.M. will be allowed three nominations.

Description
The Instrumentation for Materials Research - Major Instrumentation Project (IMR-MIP) program in the Division of Materials Research provides support for the design and construction of major instruments costing more than $2 million at major US facilities. The program also supports the development of detailed conceptual and engineering design for new tools for materials preparation or characterization at major national facilities. Such instruments may include, for example, neutron beam lines, synchrotron beam lines, and high field magnets, as well as development of detectors and preparation environments necessary to support materials research. The program supports two types of awards: Conceptual and Engineering Design (CED) awards and Construction (CNST) awards. A CED award will enable the proposer to do the necessary engineering design of the instrument. A CNST proposal may only be submitted after a satisfactory engineering design of the instrument has been completed and has been approved by both the facility at which the instrument will be situated and by NSF. The program does not provide operating funds for projects it supports through this solicitation. Operational costs must be supported either by the facility at which the instrument is located or through some other source. In FY 2004 the program budget was $3.0 million. This level of support is expected to increase in FY 2005 and future years, depending upon the availability of funds.

Description
The program is designed for candidates who expect to complete the requirements for the Ph.D. in the fields of pharmacology or toxicology in two years or less from the time the fellowship begins. The program assumes that the fellows will devote full-time (including summers) to their research. The focus of the program is to assist in the predoctoral training of the candidate. It should not be viewed as a program to fund a research project.
In the field of pharmacology or toxicology, applications that will receive highest priority are those in which the research attempts to integrate information on the mechanism of action of a drug or chemical at a molecular or cellular level with the drug's effects in the intact laboratory animal or human, encompassing the potential influences of biochemical, physiological, or behavioral systems.
