Title Instrumentation for Materials Research - Major Instrumentation Projects Agencies National Science Foundation (NSF) Description The Instrumentation for Materials Research - Major Instrumentation Project (IMR-MIP) program in the Division of Materials Research provides support for the design and construction of major instruments costing more than $2 million at major US facilities. The program also supports the development of detailed conceptual and engineering design for new tools for materials preparation or characterization at major national facilities. Such instruments may include, for example, neutron beam lines, synchrotron beam lines, and high field magnets, as well as development of detectors and preparation environments necessary to support materials research. The program supports two types of awards: Conceptual and Engineering Design (CED) awards and Construction (CNST) awards. A CED award will enable the proposer to do the necessary engineering design of the instrument. A CNST proposal may only be submitted after a satisfactory engineering design of the instrument has been completed and has been approved by both the facility at which the instrument will be situated and by NSF. The program does not provide operating funds for projects it supports through this solicitation. Operational costs must be supported either by the facility at which the instrument is located or through some other source. In FY 2004 the program budget was $3.0 million. This level of support is expected to increase in FY 2005 and future years, depending upon the availability of funds. Title Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Awards Agencies Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) Description The Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Awards provide seed money for research by junior faculty at Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) member institutions. These awards are intended to enrich the research and professional growth of young faculty and result in new funding opportunities. The research project must be in one of the following six disciplines: applied science engineering, life sciences, mathematics or computer sciences, physical sciences, policy, management, or education. Title Extramural Research Facilities Improvement Program Agencies National Institutes of Health (NIH) Description The National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) is authorized under Sections 481A and 481B of the Public Health Services Act, as amended by Sections 303 and 304 of Public Law (PL) 106-505, to "make grants or contracts to public and nonprofit private entities to expand, remodel, renovate, or alter existing research facilities or construct new research facilities." The facilities will be used for basic and clinical biomedical and behavioral research and research training. This grant mechanism may not be used for the purchase of stand alone equipment that does not include an alteration, renovation, or new construction project component. In response to this PA, an institution, which has currently one or more PHS-supported basic or clinical biomedical or behavioral research projects, may submit two applications to the Research Facilities Improvement Program in the same fiscal year for projects that encompass different scopes and are from two different "stand alone" components that are uniquely identified subordinate organizational elements of the institution (for example, a medical school and a dental school within a university). Biodefense applications will not count toward the limit of two traditional C06 applications per institution. Submitting a notice of intent

Anyone wishing to submit a proposal for one of these programs should click on the appropriate link in the list above. To expedite the process of planning an internal competition, please submit your notice of intent as soon as you know you have an interest in the funding program. You are only required to include the name of the Principal Investigator, any co-PI's, and the subject or title of the proposed project. The deadline for the internal notice of intent is indicated above.
