Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) is an NSF-wide program that supports international activities across all NSF supported disciplines. The primary goal of PIRE is to support high quality projects in which advances in research and education could not occur without international collaboration. PIRE seeks to catalyze a higher level of international engagement in the U.S. science and engineering community.
International partnerships are essential to addressing critical science and engineering problems. In the global context, U.S. researchers and educators must be able to operate effectively in teams with partners from different nations and cultural backgrounds. PIRE promotes excellence in science and engineering through international collaboration and facilitates development of a diverse, globally-engaged, U.S. science and engineering workforce.
This PIRE competition will focus exclusively on the NSF-wide investment area of Science, Engineering, and Education for Sustainability (SEES). The SEES effort focuses on interdisciplinary topics that will advance sustainability science, engineering and education as an integrative approach to the challenges of adapting to environmental, social and cultural changes associated with growth and development of human populations, and attaining a sustainable energy future. Additional details are provided in the Summary of Program Requirements below.

Collections in Support of Biological Research (CSBR)
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
The Collections in Support of Biological Research (CSBR) Program provides funds for improvements to secure, improve, and organize collections that are significant to the NSF/BIO-funded research community. Support is also provided to secure collections-related data for sustained, accurate, and efficient accessibility of the collection to the biological research community. Supplemental funding is also available to transfer collection ownership responsibilities or consolidate or combine existing collections.
The CSBR program provides for enhancements that secure and improve existing collections, result in accessible digitized specimen-related data, and develop better methods for specimen curation and collection management. Requests should demonstrate a clear and urgent need to secure the collection, and the proposed activities should
address that need. Biological collections supported include established living stocks/culture collections, vouchered
non-living natural history collections, and jointly-curated ancillary collections such as preserved tissues and DNA libraries.

Partnerships for Research and Education in Materials (PREM)
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
The objective of PREM is to broaden participation and enhance diversity in materials research and education by stimulating the development of formal, long-term, multi-investigator, collaborative research and education partnerships between minority-serving colleges/universities and the NSF DMR-supported centers, institutes, and/or facilities.
PREM awards are expected to achieve significant increases in the number and quality of interactions between faculty and students at minority-serving colleges/universities and participants from the DMR-supported centers, institutes and facilities, and should result in increasing graduate materials-related degrees for underrepresented minorities and in networking and dissemination of new knowledge. NSF's commitment to broadening participation is embedded in its Strategic Plan.
Funded activities might include, but are not limited to, the development of collaborative and mutually beneficial materials research and education projects, support for graduate and undergraduate students, and exchanges of faculty and students. High school students and teachers may also participate. Of special interest to DMR are activities based on research and education connections between the participants and designed to increase the recruitment, retention and degree attainment by members of underrepresented groups in materials research. The participation of 2-year and 4-year Associate degree granting institutions in partnership with eligible institutions may be considered for this goal. While PREM awards engage in fundamental materials research, activities that encourage entrepreneurship are also of special interest to NSF.
To date, successful PREMs have a strong overlap in research focus with the partner institution, and fully integrate the partner into the research and education activities of the PREM. In addition, successful PREMs have a well defined management structure, with active internal and external advisory committees.

Career Awards for Medical Scientists (CAMS)
Agencies
Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF)
Description
The CAMS program is the result of the reformulation of the Career Awards in the Biomedical Sciences (CABS), which was instituted by BWF in 1995 and ran through the 2006 award year. In response to the NIH's K99/R00 Pathway to Independence program, which was modeled after the CABS award, BWF has shifted the focus of the CABS program to address an on-going problem. By increasing the number of physician scientists and keeping them in research, BWF believes that this bridging award, supporting the last year(s) of a mentored position in addition to supporting the beginning years of an independent position, will facilitate the transition to a career in research and buy time from service commitments. The program provides awards for physician-scientists bridge advanced postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service. Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease-oriented, or translational research. Proposals in health services research or involving large-scale clinical trials are ineligible.

International Tobacco and Health Research and Capacity Building Program (R01)
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
This FOA solicits collaborative research and capacity building projects that address the burden of tobacco use in low-and middle-income countries (LMIC) by pursuing observational, intervention and policy research of LMIC relevance and building capacity in epidemiological and behavioral research, prevention, treatment, communications, implementation, health services and policy research. The level of research and research training specialization in any given project will vary based on the strengths of the particular investigators and institutions and the specific need to build capacity to support locally relevant research on tobacco control interventions. The overall intent of the program is to encourage trans-disciplinary research to the international tobacco epidemic and to reduce the global burden of morbidity and mortality caused by tobacco use. The program is designed to promote international cooperation between investigators in the United States or other high-income countries (HIC) pursuing research programs on tobacco control, and scientists and institutions in LMIC where tobacco consumption is a current or anticipated public health urgency. The program allows U.S. and other HIC investigators to gain expertise working under LMIC-specific conditions and strengthens the research base of the U.S. and foreign institutions, especially those institutions in LMIC. To this end, capacity strengthening must be an integrated and significant part of the research proposal.

Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award (IRACDA) (K12)
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
The purpose of this program is to develop a diverse group of highly trained biomedical and behavioral scientists who are available to work on NIH-funded research and to address the nation's biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs. The program promotes consortia between research-intensive institutions (RII) and partner institutions that have a historical mission and a demonstrated commitment to the training, encouragement and assistance to students from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral research enterprise of the nation. The IRACDA program provides support for a traditional mentored postdoctoral research experience at an RII combined with an opportunity to develop the academic skills, including teaching, through workshops and through mentored teaching assignments of postdoctoral fellows at a partner institution. The primary goals of the IRACDA program are to develop a diverse group of highly trained biomedical and behavioral scientists who have the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue research and teaching careers in academia; and strengthen the overall teaching and research opportunities at partner institutions, with the expectation that it would further foster the development of the next generation of a diverse pool of scientists who are available to address the NIH's biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs.
The specific objectives of this initiative include the following:
1. Develop the research, teaching, and other skills of postdoctoral scholars that are needed to conduct high quality research and pursue a research and teaching career in an academic environment
2. Foster the development of research-oriented science curriculum at partner institutions
3. Increase the pool of well-qualified underrepresented students from the partner institutions who participate in research at the RII, and go on to research careers in the biomedical and behavioral sciences
4. Promote links between RIIs and partner institutions that can lead to further collaborations in research
