Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Centers (T42)
Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)/ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) invites grant applications for Education and Research Centers (ERC) that are focused on occupational safety and health training and research training. NIOSH is mandated to provide an adequate supply of qualified personnel to carry out the purposes of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the ERCs are one of the principal means for meeting this mandate. ERCs are academic institutions that provide interdisciplinary graduate training and continuing education in the core occupational safety and health areas of industrial hygiene (IH), occupational health nursing (OHN), occupational medicine residency (OMR), occupational safety (OS), as well as other closely related occupational safety and health (OSH) fields. Research and research training are integral components of ERCs, thus ERC scientists conduct peer reviewed, investigator initiated research on issues related to the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA).

Title
Medical Research Program
Agencies
W. M. Keck Foundation
Description
The W.M. Keck Foundation's Medical Research Program seeks to advance the frontiers of medicine to benefit humanity by supporting high-risk/high-impact projects that are distinctive and novel in their approach to intractable problems, push the edge of their field, or question the prevailing paradigm. Research projects should focus on basic research and not be clinical in nature. Medical research projects conducted in hospitals are not eligible.
Programmatic Criteria
Projects for which one or more of the following applies:
- focus on emerging areas of research at the forefront of science, engineering and/or medicine
- have the potential to lead to breakthrough technologies
- are innovative, distinctive and interdisciplinary
- demonstrate a high level of risk in that the research pushes the edge of its field, represents unconventional approaches to intransigent problems, or challenges the prevailing paradigm
- have the potential for transformative impact, such as creation of a new field of research, development of new instrumentation enabling observations not previously possible, or discovery of new knowledge that challenges prevailing perspectives.
- fall outside the mission of public funding agencies
- demonstrate that private philanthropy generally, and the W.M. Keck Foundation in particular, is essential to the project's success.
Projects Ineligible for Funding
- Routine institutional or general operating expenses, general endowments, deficit reduction, or general and/or administrative overhead expenses
- General and federated campaigns, including fundraising events, dinners, mass mailings or direct mail campaigns
- Clinical research or treatment trials
- Acquisition, construction or major renovation of facilities
- Conference or seminar sponsorship
- Book publication and film or theater productions
- Projects to be undertaken outside the United States
- Public policy research or activities of any kind
- Projects requesting a grant of over $5 million, other than special projects initiated by the Foundation
Note:
Brief overview of the Keck guidelines.
* The Foundation is now limiting requests to $1M.
* Each institution may submit on proposal per cycle to both the Medical Research Program and to the Science and Technology Research Program. The project should lie outside the traditional research funding areas. Ideally, the researchers should have submitted or at least had conversations with federal funding agencies and have been declined.
* Project components such as mentoring and teambuilding are not foci of Phase 1 projects
* The Foundation is interested in basic science and technology breakthroughs. They are not interested in specific applications.
* The Foundation does not fund projects focused on specific diseases. For instance, cancer research provides a good opportunity to study normal vs. abnormal cells. They are not interested in how to cure/treat cancer, but rather, on more fundamental research that is generalizable.

Description
The W.M. Keck Foundation's Science and Engineering Research Program seeks to benefit humanity by supporting high-risk/high-impact projects that are distinctive and novel in their approach to intractable problems, push the edge of their field, or question the prevailing paradigm. Past grants have been awarded to major universities and independent research institutions to support pioneering science and engineering research and the development of promising new technologies, and to facilitate the purchase of advanced instruments where such instruments would further research ideas.
Programmatic Criteria
Projects for which one or more of the following applies:
- focus on emerging areas of research at the forefront of science, engineering and/or medicine

Agencies
United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)
Description
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is an independent agency, established by the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974, tasked with licensing and regulating the Nation's civilian use of byproduct, source, and special nuclear material to ensure adequate protection of public health and safety, to promote the common defense and security, and to protect the environment. Funding under this program includes support for nuclear science, engineering, and related disciplines to develop a workforce capable of supporting the design, construction, operation, and regulation of nuclear facilities and the safe handling of nuclear materials. This announcement is for undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships. The Scholarship Program provides funding to colleges and universities to award scholarships to individuals pursuing nuclear science, engineering, and other disciplines that may be beneficial in developing and maintaining a nuclear workforce. The Fellowship Program provides funding to colleges and universities to award fellowships to individuals pursuing nuclear science, engineering and other disciplines that may be beneficial in developing and maintaining a nuclear workforce. NRC is preferentially awarding fellowships in the fields of nuclear engineering, health physics, radiochemistry, and other related disciplines.
More Information
http://www.grants.gov/search/search.do?mode=VIEW&oppId=55072
Submission Limits
Institutions may submit only one application for the Scholarship Program and one application for the Fellowship Program. If applicants are requesting both scholarships and fellowships, they should be requested in separate applications. When multiple institutions are involved in a cooperative or partnership arrangement, one institution must be designated as the prime institution and funding for the other institution(s) must be requested via a subcontract to be administered by the prime institution.
Cost Sharing:
Cost sharing is not required. However, institutions are encouraged to leverage NRC funding (non-Federal funds) to enhance the benefits of the NRC grant. Those demonstrating such leveraging in response to this solicitation (a written agreement or letter is required at the time the application is submitted) to further its goals will receive additional consideration in the peer review process (see V.1. Agencies
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
MARC Ancillary Training Activities provide support for underrepresented students and/or faculty from minority-serving institutions to participate in scientific conferences, scientific short courses or other well-defined activities that further the MARC mission. The activity/activities must provide participants with the knowledge, skills and/or networking capabilities to pursue and thrive in biomedically- related research careers. Applications may be submitted by U.S. institutions, including scientific or professional societies. The responsibility for planning, managing and conducting the MARC ancillary activity lies solely with the applicant organization. The applicant must set measurable goals and specific objectives against which the T36 program will use for self-assessment and will be evaluated for continual improvement and further funding. Variation among programs is expected and any amount of funds may be requested, as long as the rationale is strongly justified. The grant is for up to five years and is renewable.
