In the current competition, efforts must be related to the biological sciences, engineering, or the geological sciences. (2) An institution that awards associate or baccalaureate degrees is allowed to be the lead institution on only one proposal to the EHR-BIO STEP Center competition, only one proposal to the EHR-ENG STEP Centers competition, and only one proposal to the EHR-GEO STEP Centers competition. Thus, a given institution may be the lead institution on up to three proposal submissions in total. An institution may be a partner institution on any number of submissions. Title U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Funding Opportunity Announcement, Scholarship and Fellowship Education Grant, Fiscal Year 2010 Agencies United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Description The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is an independent agency, established by the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974, tasked with licensing and regulating the Nation's civilian use of byproduct, source, and special nuclear material to ensure adequate protection of public health and safety, to promote the common defense and security, and to protect the environment. Funding under this program includes support for nuclear science, engineering, and related disciplines to develop a workforce capable of supporting the design, construction, operation, and regulation of nuclear facilities and the safe handling of nuclear materials. This announcement is for undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships. Title MARC Ancillary Training Activities (T36) Agencies National Institutes of Health (NIH) Description MARC Ancillary Training Activities provide support for underrepresented students and/or faculty from minority-serving institutions to participate in scientific conferences, scientific short courses or other well-defined activities that further the MARC mission. The activity/activities must provide participants with the knowledge, skills and/or networking capabilities to pursue and thrive in biomedically- related research careers. Applications may be submitted by U.S. institutions, including scientific or professional societies. The responsibility for planning, managing and conducting the MARC ancillary activity lies solely with the applicant organization. The applicant must set measurable goals and specific objectives against which the T36 program will use for self-assessment and will be evaluated for continual improvement and further funding. Funding under this announcement is intended to support new faculty in the nuclear-related fields of nuclear engineering, health physics, and radiochemistry. The grants specifically target probationary, tenure-track faculty in these academic areas during the first six years of their career. Grants could include support for developing proposals for research and small amounts for initiating or continuing research projects in their areas of expertise. Other areas might include course development, equipment stipends, participation in professional society meetings, preparation of papers, travel, and associated expenses. Awards may be increased to the extent that a portion of the award is matched by the institution. The program intends to provide support to enable new faculty to enhance their careers as professors and researchers in the University department where employed. Title Instrument Development for Biological Research (IDBR) Agencies National Science Foundation (NSF) Description The Instrument Development for Biological Research (IDBR) Program supports the development of instrumentation that addresses demonstrated needs in biological research, in areas supported by NSF Biology programs (see http://www.nsf.gov/bio). The program accepts two types of proposals: 1. Innovation Proposals: Proposals for the development of innovative instrumentation that permits new kinds of measurements, or instruments that significantly improve current technologies by at least an order of magnitude in fundamental aspects (such as accuracy, precision, resolution, throughput, flexibility, breadth of application, cost of construction or operation, or user-friendliness). 2. Bridging Proposals: Proposals for transforming, ‘one of a kind' prototypes or high-end instruments into devices that are broadly available and utilizable without loss of capacity. If appropriate, PIs should seek SBIR, STTR or similar support mechanism for implementation of broad distribution following an IDBR award. The goal is to produce systems that would benefit a broad user community through mass distribution of the technology. This program does not support access to an individual instrument in a user facility, or to data collected thereby; such proposals should be submitted to other relevant programs or agencies. Projects focused on enhancing research capabilities in a specific research lab, institution, center or consortium are not eligible for IDBR support. Similarly not eligible are projects for the development of methods, assays, or software for instrument operation, data acquisition or analysis, except as a component of the instrument development and testing. Interdisciplinary collaborations are strongly encouraged, as are partnerships with U.S. industries that can facilitate knowledge transfer, commercialization and broad utilization in the research community. In addition to NSF's standard merit review criteria (see below) the following points will be considered in proposal evaluation: Innovation Proposals: Need and potential impact on biological research, novelty of the device, or clear demonstration of at least an order of magnitude improvement over available technologies, and feasibility of the technical plan. Bridging Proposals: The magnitude of the potential user community and demonstrated strength of need, technical plan, and the dissemination plan for making the technology available to the community. To expedite the process of planning an internal competition, please submit your notice of intent as soon as you know you have an interest in the funding program. You are only required to include the name of the Principal Investigator, any co-PI's, and the subject or title of the proposed project.
