Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) in Engineering
Agencies
National Science Foundation (NSF)
Description
The Directorate for Engineering (ENG), Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) in Engineering program supports the active involvement of K-12 teachers and community college faculty in engineering research in order to bring knowledge of engineering and technological innovation into their classrooms. The goal is to help build long-term collaborative partnerships between K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teachers, community college faculty, and the NSF university research community by involving the teachers in engineering research and helping them translate their research experiences and new knowledge of engineering into classroom activities. Partnerships with inner city schools or other high need schools are especially encouraged, as is participation by underrepresented minorities, women, and persons with disabilities. This announcement features two mechanisms for support of in-service and pre-service K-12 teachers and/or community college faculty: RET supplements to ongoing ENG awards and new RET Site awards. RET supplements may be included in proposals for new or renewed NSF Directorate for Engineering (ENG) grants or as supplements to ongoing NSF ENG funded projects. RET Sites are based on independent proposals from engineering departments, schools or colleges to initiate and conduct research participation projects for a number of K-12 teachers and/or community college faculty.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
The NIH recognizes a unique and compelling need to promote diversity in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social sciences research workforce. The NIH expects efforts to diversify the workforce to lead to the recruitment of the most talented researchers from all groups; to improve the quality of the educational and training environment; to balance and broaden the perspective in setting research priorities; to improve the ability to recruit subjects from diverse backgrounds into clinical research protocols; and to improve the Nation's capacity to address and eliminate health disparities. This FOA issued by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, solicits Research Education (R25) applications from institutions and organizations to promote diversity in undergraduate and health professional student populations by providing short-term research education support to stimulate career development in cardiovascular, pulmonary, and hematologic diseases research.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Description
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)/ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) invites grant applications for Education and Research Centers (ERC) that are focused on occupational safety and health training and research training. NIOSH is mandated to provide an adequate supply of qualified personnel to carry out the purposes of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the ERCs are one of the principal means for meeting this mandate. ERCs are academic institutions that provide interdisciplinary graduate training and continuing education in the core occupational safety and health areas of industrial hygiene (IH), occupational health nursing (OHN), occupational medicine residency (OMR), occupational safety (OS), as well as other closely related occupational safety and health (OSH) fields. Research and research training are integral components of ERCs, thus ERC scientists conduct peer reviewed, investigator initiated research on issues related to the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA).

Title
Medical Research Program
Agencies
W. M. Keck Foundation
Description
The W.M. Keck Foundation's Medical Research Program seeks to advance the frontiers of medicine to benefit humanity by supporting high-risk/high-impact projects that are distinctive and novel in their approach to intractable problems, push the edge of their field, or question the prevailing paradigm. Research projects should focus on basic research and not be clinical in nature. Medical research projects conducted in hospitals are not eligible.
Programmatic Criteria
Projects for which one or more of the following applies:
- focus on emerging areas of research at the forefront of science, engineering and/or medicine
- have the potential to lead to breakthrough technologies
- are innovative, distinctive and interdisciplinary
- demonstrate a high level of risk in that the research pushes the edge of its field, represents unconventional approaches to intransigent problems, or challenges the prevailing paradigm
- have the potential for transformative impact, such as creation of a new field of research, development of new instrumentation enabling observations not previously possible, or discovery of new knowledge that challenges prevailing perspectives.
- fall outside the mission of public funding agencies
- demonstrate that private philanthropy generally, and the W.M. Keck Foundation in particular, is essential to the project's success.
Projects Ineligible for Funding
- Routine institutional or general operating expenses, general endowments, deficit reduction, or general and/or administrative overhead expenses
- General and federated campaigns, including fundraising events, dinners, mass mailings or direct mail campaigns
- Clinical research or treatment trials
- Acquisition, construction or major renovation of facilities
- Conference or seminar sponsorship
- Book publication and film or theater productions
- Projects to be undertaken outside the United States
- Public policy research or activities of any kind
- Projects requesting a grant of over $5 million, other than special projects initiated by the Foundation
Note:
Brief overview of the Keck guidelines.
* The Foundation is now limiting requests to $1M.
* Each institution may submit on proposal per cycle to both the Medical Research Program and to the Science and Technology Research Program. The project should lie outside the traditional research funding areas. Ideally, the researchers should have submitted or at least had conversations with federal funding agencies and have been declined.
* Project components such as mentoring and teambuilding are not foci of Phase 1 projects
* The Foundation is interested in basic science and technology breakthroughs. They are not interested in specific applications.
* The Foundation does not fund projects focused on specific diseases. For instance, cancer research provides a good opportunity to study normal vs. abnormal cells. They are not interested in how to cure/treat cancer, but rather, on more fundamental research that is generalizable.

The W.M. Keck Foundation's Science and Engineering Research Program seeks to benefit humanity by supporting high-risk/high-impact projects that are distinctive and novel in their approach to intractable problems, push the edge of their field, or question the prevailing paradigm.
